‘Sound Of Music’ For New Year’s Eve

FAIRFIELD — Rodgers and Hammerstein’s heart-warming musical The Sound of Music is the holiday offering at The Center for the Performing Arts at Sacred Heart University. Performances are December 29 to January 14.

Directed by Maureen Hamill, who also appears as Mother Abbess, the musical is set in Austria before the outbreak of World War II. It is based on the true story of a unique singing family, the von Trapps, and their love of Maria, a young convent novice portrayed by Kim Breden, and her love for and marriage to Captain Georg von Trapp, who will be played in Fairfield by Raymond M. Michaud.

In addition to its regular schedule, the theatre will host a special New Year’s Eve performance at 7 pm on Sunday, December 31.

Memorable songs from the musical’s score include “The Sound of Music,” “Maria,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi,” “You Are Sixteen” and “Climb Every Mountain.”

Regular performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 pm, with matinees on Sunday at 3 pm. Tickets range from $17 to $20 each. The Center for the Performing Arts’ box office can be contacted at 203/374-2777.

The Center for the Performing Arts at Sacred Heart University is at 5151 Park Avenue; signs are posted from Merritt Parkway.
