Lists Scholarships
The following Scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School. Applications and/or more information for these scholarships, as well as ones previously listed in The Bee, are available there. Please call Mrs McEvoy at 426-1915 if you have any questions.
The Connecticut Junior Chamber International Scholarships â for high school seniors who plan to continue their education at accredited post-secondary colleges, universities or vocational schools. Two winners will receive a $100 scholarship and then be eligible for a scholarship of $1,000. Application must be postmarked by January 17, 2001.
Connecticut Womenâs Bowling Association â for a high school senior whose mother is a sanctioned member of the Connecticut Womenâs Bowling Association. The application and all supporting documentation must be postmarked by February 1, 2001.
University of Connecticut Alumni Association Scholarships â for high school seniors who will be attending the University of Connecticut for the 2001-2002 academic year as freshmen. The evaluation of scholarship applicants is based on four criteria: academic performance, financial need, awards and/or distinctions, and community service, extracurricular activities, and/or employment. Scholarship applications will be available via Web site at www.uconnalumni.com. Applications must be received, not postmarked, by January 19, 2001 at 5 pm.
Ted Martocchio Scholarship (Building and Trades Union) â for high school seniors who have been accepted to one of the Connecticut State Universities. To be eligible, student must have a minimum 2.75 GPA, leadership or examples of volunteer work, resident of Connecticut, and accepted to a CSU university, as well as be a child of a Building and Trades Union member. No specific major is required. Financial need must be demonstrated. Deadline for application is March 15, 2001 at 4 pm.
Latino Scholarship â this scholarship is open to Latino high school seniors residing in the Greater Danbury area (includes Newtown). A âLatinoâ is defined as any person, at least one of whose parents and/or grandparents were born in any of the recognized Spanish speaking countries, or territory of the US, and who identifies with what is commonly accepted as the Latino culture. Awards will be based on character and integrity; academic standing and/or potential; involvement in and commitment to community; and financial need. Completed application must be received by March 15, 2001.
The Hord Foundation Scholarships â for black students graduating from high schools in Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford (including Washington and Bridgewater), Newtown, Redding and Ridgefield. Students and their families must be residents of the eligible communities. Black students whose families reside in eligible communities, but who attend high school outside of such communities, are eligible to apply for a Hord Scholarship. Black students attending post-secondary school preparatory programs that lead to admission in degree or certificate programs are eligible to apply. The award criteria for a Hord Foundation Scholarship are: acceptance in an undergraduate program or other program of continuing education; academic standing; contributions to school and community; financial need; personal interview; and strength of application. Applications must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2001.
