George N. Makl

George N. Makl, 71, of Goodwin Court, Thomaston, formerly of Sandy Hook, husband of Claire (Eilertsen) Makl, died unexpectedly December 18 at Waterbury Hospital.

Born July 4, 1929, in Southbury, he was the son of the late Paul N. and Caroline (Grisgraber) Makl. Educated in Woodbury public schools, Mr Makl was employed by the original Old Hundred Ice Cream Corp, which later merged to become Baskin Robbins, where he worked as a production manager. After his retirement, he enjoyed working for Johnny’s Auto Parts in Thomaston.

As a resident of Sandy Hook for 36 years, he was a member of the Democratic Town Committee and was a charter member of the Newtown Democratic Club. Mr Makl was active in many youth organizations, including the Newtown Little League, the Pop Warner Football League, and was the original nation chief of the Indian Guides of the Danbury Newtown Council.

As a resident of Thomaston, he was the number one fan of Thomaston’s Little League, American Legion League, and Thomaston’s High School baseball team.

A veteran of the Korean War, he served as a corporal with the US Army from 1951 to 1953, stationed in Germany with the 103rd Combat Engineers, 28th Division.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David G. and Deborah Makl of Sandy Hook; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Robert Carrington of Thomaston, Diane and James Aniki of Thomaston, and Doree and Enrique Familia of Waterbury; a brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Arlene Makl of East Hampton, N.Y.; a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Rudy Lauterbach of Southbury; six grandchildren, George and Joseph Aniki, Douglas Makl and Eva, Daniel and Milena Familia; two step granddaughters; and one step great-granddaughter.

A funeral liturgy was celebrated Dec. 21 at St Thomas Roman Catholic Church, Thomaston. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Thomaston.

The Lyons Funeral Home, 46 High Street, Thomaston, was in charge of the arrangements.
