Brownie Troop 55

Reports A Busy Year

Brownie Troop 55 from Sandy Hook Elementary accomplished several projects this year. The troop has issued the following report:

The troop consists of 11 seven and eight-year-old girls who attend Sandy Hook Elementary. These girls have accomplished a lot and served the community well. Troop leaders for Troop 55 are Lorrie Silber and Lori McCollum-Tani.

The girls in Troop 55 are Alissa Silber, Mariah Tani, Samantha Liss, Morghan Moroney, Sarah Collins, Molly Ritter, Emily Reynolds, Megan Preis, Michelle Salem, Lisa Barber, and Kelly Keehan.

Some of the troop highlights include donating a pie to the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corp and several boxes of Girl Scout cookies to the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Department.

For Valentine’s Day, the girls made special valentines. They gave them to someone in town who volunteers their time to help others, according to troop leader Lorrie Silber. They learned how much it means to show someone how they are appreciated.

The girls hosted a Daisy teddy bear tea party. They did a craft project with the younger girls and danced up a storm.

The troop participated in the Labor Day Parade. Instead of throwing candy, they handed out necklaces to the senior citizens and handicapped neighbors.

For Veterans Day, the girls gathered twigs, leaves, rocks, pinecones, and many other natural elements from the Sandy Hook schoolyard. They were arranged them on a wreath with a banner that said “We are Proud” and presented it to veterans at the Veterans Day ceremony, according to Mrs Silber. The theme was “The Beauty in Our Land.” It showed that there is beauty in our land wherever you look. Sometimes we just need to stop and appreciate it and not take it for granted. Just like our veterans, we need to thank them for all they have done for our country, our land, and not take them for granted, either.

The girls made potpourri sachets and sold them for a dollar each to raise money for the Treadwell Park playground. They used some materials that were purchased from the VNA, according to Mrs Silber. How wonderful that one organization can help benefit another. They raised $139 and presented the check to Tammy Marks. We discussed the idea of how much they will enjoy knowing that they helped make this playground possible. It overwhelmed them to think that their children and grandchildren could someday use the playground too.

The girls did not stop there. They strung cranberry garland for the Matthew Curtis House. They used this during the Holiday Festival. For the second year in a row, the girls donated a tree to the Festival of Trees.

This year is almost over and Troop 55 has accomplished so much. They have touched many hearts as well as their own, according to Mrs Silber. They should be proud of themselves and proud of their families that support them through all their endeavors. We had a great year and look forward to 2001. Keep a look out for their smiling faces.
