Escape Hits Altima
Newtown Police report Kassiani Pitassi, 57, of Cumberland, Maine, operating a 2010 Ford Escape, was traveling northbound on Key Rock Road at 6:08 pm December 1. He was following behind a 2018 Nissan Altima operated by Michael Cummings, 66, of Southbury. Cummings stopped at the stop sign at the intersection with Sugar Street and Pitassi failed to stop in time, rear-ending Cummings’ vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was mentioned in the report.
Sideswiped Oncoming Car
Newtown Police report Robin Lynne Nickels, 61, of Newtown, operating a 2007 GMC Yukon, was traveling west on Sugar Street when a motor vehicle crossed the centerline and sideswiped her vehicle at 5:23 pm December 2. The vehicle then evaded responsibility, continuing east onto Sugar Street without stopping.
No injuries were reported. Nickels’ vehicle was not towed.
Three-Car Collision
Newtown Police report Kayla Wadell, 18, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2013 Buick Regal, was traveling west on Church Hill Road in the area of exit 10 at 1:59 pm December 3. Storm Songe, 36, of Oxford, operating a 2013 Ford Fiesta, was stopped in traffic behind a 2018 Subaru Outback operated by Charles Kerr, 31, of Southbury. Wadell was unable to stop in time, and rear ended Songe, whose vehicle was pushed forward into Kerr’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Wadell’s and Songe’s vehicles were towed.
Wadell was issued an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
Collided With Tree
Newtown Police report Ryan Damo, 17, of Brookfield, operating a 2006 Toyota Highlander, was traveling northbound on Hanover Road at 11:09 pm December 3. Damo’s vehicle turned right off the roadway and struck a tree.
Damo was examined by EMS but declined transport. The vehicle was towed.
Damo was issued a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.
DUI Charge
Newtown Police report Gerald Mrozek, 64, of Southbury, operating a 2019 Nissan Frontier, was parked in the parking lot of 104 Church Hill Road at 11:37 pm December 3. Nicolas Heron, 29, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2023 Genesis Gv70, was parked along the curb facing north in the lot, loading items into the vehicle through the driver’s side door. Mrozek backed from his parking spot and the rear of his vehicle made contact with the driver’s side door of Heron’s vehicle. Heron was unable to get out of the way, and the door pinned Heron in between the door and the vehicle. Mrozek then pulled forward.
Heron sustained minor injuries but refused medical aid on the scene. Mrozek’s vehicle was towed.
Mrozek was charged with driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Rear-Ended on Botsford Hill
Newtown Police report Richard Martin, 59, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2021 Ram 2500, was traveling westbound on Botsford Hill Road at 6:48 am December 4. Daniel Urciuoli, 43, of Newtown, operating a 2019 Subaru Forester, was stopped on Botsford Hill Road in traffic due to the light being red. Martin was not able to stop in time and rear-ended Urciuoli’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Urciuoli’s vehicle was towed.
Martin was issued an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
Hit Carport
Newtown Police report Tinea Davis, 43, of Hamden, operating a 2021 Ford TK, was traveling on a residential highway on Poverty Hollow Road at 2:50 pm December 5. Davis stated she misjudged the location of her vehicle in relation to the carport of the residence and made contact with it, causing damage to both the vehicle and the building.
EMS was dispatched but Davis was not transported. The vehicle was not towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Two Charged Following Fight
At 5:17 pm December 5, Newtown Police were dispatched to 9 Covered Bridge Road for the report of an assault. Following a verbal altercation, Malcolm Bryant, 59, of Newtown, attempted to block Christopher Enea, 56, of Brewster, N.Y., from leaving the residence by placing his foot in front of the doorway as Enea went to exit. This caused Enea to be hit in the head with the door. Enea then struck Bryant in the head and neck several times.
Both parties received minor injuries but refused medical attention.
Both men were arrested. Enea was charged with third-degree assault and Bryant was charged with disorderly conduct.
Both were released on a promise to appear with a court date of December 19 in Danbury Superior Court.
Did Not Return Rented Car
Newtown Police report that at 9:15 am December 6, officers arrested Timothy Matijcio, 36, of Newtown, on the charge of possession of a stolen vehicle. Matijcio had rented a vehicle from Enterprise Rent-A-Car and had not returned the vehicle.
Matijcio was released on a promise to appear with a court date of December 19 in Danbury Superior Court.
Sentra Hits Camry
Newtown Police report Richard Tondreau, 74, of Newtown, operating a 2012 Nissan Sentra, was at a stop sign on Peck’s Lane, waiting to enter South Main Street, at 4:43 pm December 6. Carolyn Simonson, 58, of Newtown, operating a 2023 Toyota Camry, was traveling northbound on South Main Street. Tondreau entered the roadway, striking Simonson’s vehicle front to passenger side.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Tondreau was issued a written warning for failure to grant right of way and an infraction for operating a motor vehicle without minimum insurance.
Fender Bender In Lot
Newtown Police report Rose Pavia, 80, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2020 Hyundai Kona, was in the parking lot of 5 Queen Street at 3:32 pm December 8. She was behind a 2024 Kia Seltos operated by Charlotte Stewart, 20, of Weston, who was waiting to exit the parking lot. Pavia rear-ended Stewart’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Hit Deer
Newtown Police report Heidi Miller, 52, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2021 Subaru Forester, was traveling southbound on Toddy Hill Road near #27 at 3:58 pm December 8. While traveling, her vehicle struck a deer, causing functional damage to the bumper.
Miller was not injured. The vehicle was not towed.
Unregistered, Uninsured, Unlicensed
Newtown Police report Mark Westerback, 50, of Sandy Hook, was arrested at 6:30 pm December 8 on the charges of operation of an unregistered motor vehicle, improper use of a marker plate, illegal operation of a motor vehicle without minimum insurance, and illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of December 21 in Danbury Superior Court.
Hit Car Leaving Driveway
Newtown Police report Angela Maffettone, 62, of Woodbury, operating a 2019 Hyundai Elantra, was pulling out of a driveway onto Edmond Road at 8:02 pm December 8. Connie Stokes, 76, of Danbury, operating a 2010 Subaru Impreza, was traveling southbound on Edmund Road. Maffetone’s vehicle collided with Stokes’ vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Maffettone was given a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way at a driveway.
Left Vehicle After Collision
Newtown Police report that at 8:51 pm December 8, Newtown Police responded to a call of a single car collision in the area of Jeremiah Road.
Upon arrival, police found the vehicle unoccupied and there were no witnesses present. Upon further investigation, Michael Crowley, 37, of Newtown, was identified as the operator of the vehicle and he was placed under arrest. He was charged with evading responsibility for injury or property damage, and failure to drive in the proper lane. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of December 22 in Danbury Superior Court.
Hit Safety Post
Newtown Police report Barbara Simon, 82, of Newtown, operating a 2016 Honda CR-V, was attempting to park in a parking space in the Walgreen’s parking lot at 12:35 pm December 9. She struck a parking safety post. The vehicle’s airbag was deployed and the vehicle sustained significant damage to the passenger side front end.
Simon was transported to Danbury Hospital for observation. The vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Went Airborne Into Porch
Newtown Police report Andy St Fleur, 29, of Norwalk, operating a 2015 Infiniti Q40, was traveling in the northbound lane of Berkshire Road at 10:46 pm, December 9. While taking a left curve in the roadway, the vehicle slid on the wet pavement and spun to the left, moving sideways down the road for approximately 300 feet. The vehicle then struck a mailbox and hit a rock while still sideways, causing it to go airborne for approximately 60 feet before landing in a driveway. The vehicle continued to move and struck the front porch of a residence, doing minor damage.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.
St Fleur was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.
Injured After Striking Tree
Newtown Police report Romeo Scott, 39, of Waterbury, operating a 1998 Honda Civic, was traveling westbound on Wasserman Way at 12:02 pm December 10. While negotiating a curve in the roadway, Scott’s vehicle crossed over the eastbound lane, traveled off the eastbound shoulder, and then struck a tree.
Scott was transported to Danbury Hospital for a possible injury. The vehicle was towed.
Scott was issued an infraction for failure to keep right on a curve.
