Anybody who sees and wants to display their own "WE ARE NEWTOWN" bumper sticker, or those wanting to acquire and distribute them as stocking stuffers this holiday season should plan to visit the organizer of a campaign to purchase and install 26 engraved memorial benches created in memory of those lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School on 12/14.

Sam Mihailoff, who also played a key role in organizing and placement of Rock of Angels, a modest memorial installed behind St John's Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook, notified The Newtown Bee this week that, thanks to the many generous contributors to his memorial bench effort, "the benches have been paid in full but installation costs are a big unknown."

"So if you need a replacement sticker or want a new one, or are just feeling benevolent this Christmas Season, please come and see me at the Exit 11 commuter lot on Saturday (December 20) between 9 am and noon," Mr Mihailoff said, "or at Eunice’s Bagel Delight on Christmas morning between 7 and 10 am."

The resident and former educator said he is humbled by donors who eventually covered all the production costs for the engraved granite benches.

"The benches are paid in full, completed, and in my possession, and enough money now exists in our bank account to present each of 26 individual foundations a check from “WE ARE NEWTOWN” in the amount of $500," Mr Mihailoff said in an email to The Bee.  "That's $13,000, something that shall show that we really are Newtown."

He said after the added donation distribution from the material fund, it leaves a zero balance, "but I am ever hopeful that this Christmas blitz shall reap enough to secure installation costs."

"The final hurdle is to locate a quiet, respectful site for all 26 benches together," he said. Mr Mihailoff said he is soliciting the community for inspiration about where the benches might eventually be located. He has also notified town officials and the Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial Commission of the availability of the granite benches.

"If any ideas for a location come to mind, please share them. I have beaten every bush I can find," he said.

Anyone with ideas is invited to join the WE ARE NEWTOWN site on Facebook, and correspond with Mr Mihailoff through that social network.
