The winter sports season is underway and Newtown High School’s teams all have postseason aspirations. The boys’ basketball team has six seniors with a wealth of varsity playing experience returning to the floor; the girls’ basketball team, led their lone senior, Sara Kelly, lost 10 of last year’s players under various circumstances but is off to a 2-0 start; Newtown’s hockey team has six new experienced players as it tries to qualify for conference and state tourneys; the wrestling team has established grapplers throughout its lineup; the swimming team expects to battle for one of the top conference spots; and Newtown’s track and field teams are stronger in the on track events than they have been in recent years.
