Police List Snow/Ice

Removal Rules

Police Sergeant Christopher Vanghele is reminding residents that with the onset of winter weather, police are enforcing regulations on snow/ice removal.

To allow the public works department to promptly remove snow from local roads, a town ordinance is in force that prohibits parking vehicles on town roads between sunset and sunrise, according to the sergeant. The ordinance’s provisions are in effect from November 15 to March 15.

Also, town law requires residents to remove snow, ice, sleet, and debris from sidewalks adjacent to their residences, he said.

Police also remind both homeowners and snow removal firms that state law prohibits depositing snow or ice on roadways or within 12 feet of roadways.

Sgt Vanghele said that state law prohibits motorists from driving vehicles that have snow/ice accumulations on their tops, backs, or sides.

If snow/ice not removed from vehicles before they are driven, that snow/ice can break loose from moving vehicles and create safety hazards or nuisances for other drivers, he said. Also, the windows of vehicles must be cleared of snow and ice before they are driven to provide unobstructed views for their drivers, he said.
