Boys 5th

Danbury 29, Newtown 21 – Daniel Gallagher scored 12 points as a Newtown rally fell short. Taylor Steimle added five points while Austin Bonadio and Sean Ross each contributed two points. Dominic Fedak had a strong defensive effort. 

Newtown 44, New Fairfield 13 – Trey Trudell scored 12 points while Taylor Steimle and Kevin Le Blanc combined for 17 more to lead the locals to the win. Michael Greenwood had an excellent game on both sides of the floor while Michael Lord and Josh Barrett both played strong defense and displayed great hustle.

Boys 6th

Newtown 45, Redding 37 – Matt ‘Big D’ Datin and Sean Maher scored eight points apiece in a win over Redding. Newtown lead 27-8 at the half and 37-21 at the end of the third quarter, but Redding roared back into the game and made it close in the final stanza. Grant Braun hit some big buckets down the stretch and Max Nacewicz was his usual forceful self under the boards as the Hawks regained their composure in time to secure the win.

Newtown 36, Easton 25 – Ishan Tatake scored seven second-half points as Newtown got another road victory at Easton. Matt Datin was the offensive force in the first half with 10 points, and good ball handling by Jack Kneisel and Lewis Thompson kept the Newtown offense in charge. Josh Engler scored seven points and Robert Carroll came up big in crunch time with four fourth-quarter points.

Newtown 54, Redding 47 – The rematch with Redding at Reed Intermediate School on Sunday was a seesaw battle that saw Josh Engler dominate. Newtown trailed 26-20 at the half but came back strong in the third quarter to take a 40-38 lead and eventually pull away down the stretch. Engler was everywhere, scoring 17 points to lead all scorers and dominating on the defensive boards to give Newtown possession as the Hawks built their comeback. Grant Braun and RJ Roman each were brilliant on the offensive glass and they had 10 points each to show for their efforts. Rob Frangione and Robert Carroll played brilliantly at both ends, hustling after loose balls, making steals, and creating openings for their teammates.

Girls 6th

Newtown 24, Wilton 11 – Colleen Cunningham scored 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as Newtown defeated Wilton. Kristen Errico and Cady Jackman combined to score 10 points and grab 16 rebounds. Alex Grant chipped in with four points as Maggie Donohue and Jen Smith played well on defense.

Newtown 17, Bethel 14 – Colleen Cunningham scored 10 points and Maggie Donohue made 15 steals to lead Newtown over Bethel. The locals grabbed 37 rebounds in the game, 12 each from Kristen Errico and Cunningham. Sam Whitley and Casey-Rose Kearns anchored the defense.

Girls 7th

Redding 42, Newtown 29 – Newtown had a tough time matching up against a taller Redding squad and lost 42-29. Sara Kelley netted 12 points on the night (4-for-4 from the line) while Nicole Elias chipped in five. Brittany Wiberg was strong on the boards for Newtown while Meghan Bridges played well defensively.

New Fairfield 37, Newtown 21 – Despite a good effort toward a second half comeback, Newtown struggled to score and lost to New Fairfield. Kate Bowen, Kaitlin Marsden and Jennifer Daily combined to score 17 points for Newtown. Ally Modzelewski and Stephanie Suhoza supplied the defensive pressure while Carolyn Fagan was strong off the boards.

Boys 7th

Newtown 58, Westport 55 (OT) – Andy Lapple (15), Dan Lynch (14) and George Zaruba (10) led the scoring attack as Newtown toughed out a win in overtime. Kyle Kromberg and Ralph Sergiovanni hit critical shots in the extra session to ice the game. Max Paynter, Peter Young, Dan Greenwood and Nick Nazer keyed the defense that led to a 10-point lead in the third quarter as Casey Tenney provided critical rebound support on both ends of the court.

Newtown 59, Redding 21 – An even, balanced attack overwhelmed Redding 59-21 in the first conference game for the locals. Newtown outscored its opponent in the first half, 28-15, by converting turnovers and high-percentage shots. Kyle Kromberg (13), George Zaruba (11), Peter Young (9), Andy Lapple (9) and Ralph Sergiovanni (7) led the scoring attack. Casey Tenney, Nick Nazer, Dan Lynch, Dan Greenwood, and Max Paynter played strong on both ends of the court.

Newtown 66, Easton 16 – The locals ran their record to 5-0 with an easy win over Easton. All players contributed to a balanced offense as all ten players scored. George Zaruba (14) led the way with Kyle Kromberg and Max Paynter chipping in eight points apiece. Ralph Sergiovanni also scored eight and had five blocked shots. Dan Lynch, Casey Tenney and Pete Young scored six points apiece.

Girls 8th

Ridgefield 50, Newtown 31 – Newtown fell to Ridgefield in a fast-paced game. Newtown hung in the game until Ridgefield outscored them by 15 points in the fourth quarter. Nora Lynn Shimko had 12 points and Jen Brewer added seven. Rachel Taback led the team in rebounding with 11 and Kelsey Hopper led in steals with three.

Danbury 43, Newtown 27 – Newtown lost a tough game to Danbury, which overpowered Newtown with its size. Nora Lynn Shimko once again led the scoring with 12 points and also led the team in rebounding with six. Kasey Schulz chipped in six points and led the team in steals with nine. Linda Magliocco played strong defense and added two steals and four points to the effort.

Junior Boys

Jaspers 47, Bullets 35 – Steve Musco scored 17 points and Jason Kostecki added 13 more to lead the Jaspers to the win. Chris Caulfield scored six points and dished off six assists. For the Bullets, Rob O’Donnell popped in eight points while Evan Kennedy, Zack Bryant and Charlie Kerr played well.

Heat 46, Yellowjackets 34 – John Aminti lifted the Heat to the victory with a 12-point effort. Jeff Brown dished off eight assists while Chris Winter and Jamey Bower played well. For the ‘Jackets, Ryan Schmidt canned 10 points and Dylan Kelleher added five more. Michael Poeltl and Brandon Bennett had good floor games.

Lakers 57, Knicks 30 – Andrew Meisel and Nicky Tarantino combined for 27 points as the Lakers scorched the Knicks. Jeff DiNicola had 10 assists while Brendan O’Connell grabbed 14 rebounds. Tyler Edwards added eight steals. For the Knicks, Jeff Spencer popped in 10 points as Brad Biscoe and Kenton Lord played well.

Celtics 33, Nighthawks 16 – Joe Selezan scored 13 points and Jamie Vavrek added nine more to lead the Celtics past the Nighthawks. Ryan Pendergist and Rockwell Anyoha had good floor games. For the ‘Hawks, Alex Miller and Paul Murphy combined for nine points as Tim Dalton and Andrew Matsis sparked the defense.

Wildcats 51, Rockets 39 – Jake DeVellis poured in 31 points to lift the Wildcats to the win. Vince LaFrancesca added seven points, Mike Lago dragged down six rebounds, and Mitch Udiskey made five steals. For the Rockets, Peter Wlasuk popped in 12 points as Kevin Carney, Brendan Blawie and Josh Jowdy had solid floor games.

Nuggets 40, Huskies 27 – Matt Narel scored 12 points and Chris Page grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Nuggets. Joey Deakin had four steals. For the Huskies, Zach Brazo poured in a game-high 18 points and pulled down 18 rebounds. AJ Ritchie and Zach Doloughy played well.

Celtics 42, Bobcats 37 – Joe Selezan scored 11 points and Jamie Vavrek added 10 to lift the Celtics to the win. Ryan Pendergist added six points while Tony Vacaro and Trevor Todd played well. For the ‘Cats, Kyle Pickle had 11 points, Dan Quinn dished off 10 assists, and Kevin Walsh grabbed 12 rebounds. Spencer Williams had six points and Jeff Selezan contributed six steals.

Eagles 38, Hawkeyes 28 – Keith McGrath scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles to the win. Kyle O’Connor dished off five assists. For the Hawkeyes, Tom Mascher, Mike Tobin and Calvin Song played well.

Bulls 34, Knicks 28 – Kelly Sullivan scored 12 points and Mary Plavnicky added five to lead the Bulls to the win. Michele Davies had five assists and Bernice Bryant grabbed six rebounds for the Bulls. For the Knicks, Kristen Tassinari had eight points as Katherine Stanton and Marnie Thompson had good floor games.

Pacers 38, Huskies 21 – Lindsay Laub had 10 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists to power the Pacers. Stephanie Spath added five points as Annie Fletcher and Brady Eggleston had fine overall games. Betsy Vendel led the Huskies with 11 points, Scarlett O’Sullivan added four assists and Bryony Langdon grabbed five rebounds.

Celtics 27, Sixers 21 – Sam Lockhart scored six points and Lyndsey Burns played stellar defense to lead the Celtics to the win. Laura Newbury led the team in assists. For the Sixers, Gina Pisacreta and Kaley Kruger combined for 13 points as Alyssa Buda and Katie Pessin had fine games.

Intermediate Girls

Suns 29, Nighthawks 27 – A strong offensive effort by Kelly O’Connor carried the Suns to the win. Strong rebounding by Breanne Lubinski and superb help defense from Marissa Cucco were important factors. Caitlin Dowling and Keri Chernoff played well. For the ‘Hawks, Shannon Paproski scored eight points and Kelley Gaston grabbed eight rebounds. Bianca LeBlanc and Jessica Fossum played well.

Shamrocks 22, Huskies 21 – Kelly Anne Brophy scored 18 points and led the Shamrocks to the narrow win. Kara Murray, Julie Ficks and Jamie Keating all played well. For the Huskies, Emma Kingsley canned eight points while Mary Hamula, Nicole Davis and Aria Brownell had strong games.

Da Bulls 18, Liberty 11 – Jenna Bonaccorso and Taylor Benson combined on 14 points to lift Da Bulls to da win. Nicole Rotante and Jessica Haitz had good floor games.

Da Bears 27, Rim Rockers 15 – Andrea Nazer scored 12 points and Emma Fiore added eight more as Da Bears rolled. Mara Scallon, Meredith Bridges and Emma Glasrud had good floor games. For the Rockers, Amanda Swift popped in eight points as Tori Picerno, Alex Cernick and Sara Benson played well.

Bullets 28, Eagles 14 – Sam Kerr canned 13 points as the Bullets defeated the Eagles. Greg Campbell, Justin Spath and Derek Krewson played well. For the Eagles, Oliver Powers scored six points and Mason West had nine rebounds. Mike Zaccaro dished off five assists while Ben Stoller sparked the defense.

Huskies 31, Hawkeyes 28 – Tom Cascia and Kyle Wilcox scored five points apiece to lead the Huskies to the win. Keenan Bennett, Chad Magoulas and Tyler Covert (six boards) had fine floor games. For the Hawkeyes, Sean Devaney canned eight points while Colin Cooper and Bobby Mascher played well.

Wildcats 34, Mavericks 27 – Brandon Body scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds to lift the ‘Cats to the win. Chris Haylon dished off five assists and Max Brazo made seven steals. For the Mavericks, Tom Capozziello scored 11 points while Peter Ovandorf and Sean Burson played well.

Vipers 39, Regulators 23 – Ryan Powers poured in 18 points as the Vipers rolled to the win. Steve Braun, Travis LeBlanc and Eric McCabe had strong floor games. For the Regulators, Austin Jones scored nine points while Mike Ruddy and Nick Dinelli played well.

Celtics 31, Knicks 28 – Ryan Korth and Drew Seymour popped in 10 points apiece to power the Celtics. Ryan LeMay had a strong floor game at the point. For the Knicks, Danny Weir and John Johnson canned 12 points apiece as Erik Samuelson dished off three assists. Tom Johnson played well.

Nighthawks 32, Vikings 24 – Hank Helgren popped in 12 points and led the Nighthawks to the win. Austin Pulari, Jason Marks and Kyle Harrington played well. For the Vikings, Tom Murphy scored eight points as James Rebman, Kevin Phillips and Alex Saviano had fine performances.

Bullets 45, Hawkeyes 29 – Greg Campbell scored 18 points and Pat Zingaro grabbed eight redounds to lead the Bullets to the win. Justin Spath and Kory Kling played well. For the Hawkeyes, Matt Vavrek, Joshua Volpe, and Tom Stewart had fine floor games.

Bullets 32, Knicks 31 – Sam Kerr canned 17 points and Rob Uhde pulled down 10 rebounds as the Bullets nipped the Knicks. Rob Daigle dished off six assists and Joe Pieretti made five steals. For the Knicks, Dan White popped in 11 points and John Wlasuk added eight. Tom Andersau played well.

Nighthawks 25, Vipers 20 (OT) – Austin Puleri scored eight points as the Nighthawks slipped past the Vipers in overtime. Jason Marks and Hank Helgren played well. For the Vipers, Ryan Powers canned nine points and Greg Frattaroli and Eric McCabe had solid performances.

Regulators 30, Hawkeyes 30 – Austin Jones scored 14 points and Griffin Paynter dished off six assists to lead the Regulators. Mike Ruddy and Nick Dinelli played well. For the Hawkeyes, Michael Tenney paced the offense as Bobby Mascher and David Lucia played well on D.

Blazers 33, Mavericks 24 – Will Northrup scored 12 points and Brian Reed dragged down 10 rebounds to lead the Blazers to the win. Scott Wexler dished off six assists and Ryan O’Keefe made four steals. For the Mavs, Dan Sclafani popped in 10 points and Luke Piazza had a fine floor game.

Celtics 16, Wildcats 14 – Ryan Korth scored four points in a low-scoring affair. Drew Seymour, Christian Sayegh and Mike Lengel played well. For the ‘Cats, Max Brazo scored six points and Brandon Body pulled down five rebounds. Chris Haylon and Mike George played well.

Eagles 48, Huskies 21 – Oliver Powers scored 16 points and Joey Magglio added eight as the Eagles rolled in the win. Michael Zaccaro, Ben Stoller and Mason West had strong games. For the Huskies, Jack Magoulas and Kyle Wilcox combined for nine points as Scott Keating and Jack McManus played well.
