Mini Fun

In New Milford

NEW MILFORD — From December 18 to 31, another miniature vintage railroad station will draw fans for a trip to the past as they visit the annual “Hands-On Train Display” of model trains.

The towns, populated by tiny figures dressed in winter finery, are crisscrossed by whizzing layouts of scale model Lionel trains. They are set up on two tables, one 6 by 12 feet and the other 5 by 10 feet, with almost 100 feet of track.

Visitors can do more than admire the trains. They can take the controls, starting and stopping the action, deciding on the speed and switch points and operating signals and lights.

The New Milford Station, on Railroad Street, which once accommodated as many as 18 real trains a day on the old Housatonic Line, was dormant until a local drive for restoration began in the 1980s. The spiffy restored waiting room is now used for many events and the former freight office houses New Milford’s Chamber of Commerce.
