Marty Goldberg

Marty Goldberg, 92, husband of the late Bernadette (Smyth) Goldberg, formerly of Newtown, died December 14 at the Jewish Home in Rockleigh, N.J., just a few days short of his 93rd birthday.

He was born in Stepney on the family farm on December 18, 1911, a son of the late Jacob and Molly (Goldman) Goldberg. Mr Goldberg was a longtime resident of the Hattertown and Gregory’s Orchard districts of Newtown until moving in 1996 to live with his daughter in New Jersey after the death of his wife.

His family moved from Stepney to Eden Hill Road and lived on the Hoitko farm prior to settling at the Hattertown Green. He attended the one-room schoolhouse in Hattertown through the eighth grade.

Marty served in the US Army during World War II in Company C 49th Engineers Battalion. He was stationed in England before D-Day and during that time he met his late wife. He then saw action in Normandy, Battle of the Bulge, Northern France, Rhineland, and the Ardennes.

He was married to Bernadette Smyth for more than 50 years. Returning home after the war, he and his wife built their home on Aunt Park Lane on land from his father’s farm.

He was a carpenter by trade and was for more than 50 years a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, Local No 210 in Norwalk. He always had a love of farming and growing vegetables and was an avid beekeeper, and was often called to collect swarms. He experimented with grafting fruit trees and dogwood, eventually growing apples and pears on the same tree. In his later years in Tenafly he made birdhouses.

He also loved baseball, square dancing, and the outdoors. After his retirement in 1968 he spent part of the winter in Jensen Beach, Fla., where he became an expert surf fisherman.

He is survived by a daughter, Maureen Malovany and her husband Robert of Tenafly, N.J.; a brother, Raymond Goldberg of Newtown; a sister, Yetta Sebehar of Plano, Texas; two grandchildren, Brian and Mara Malovany; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held December 16 at St Rose Cemetery, Cherry Street, Sandy Hook. A memorial service will be held in Newtown after the holidays.

Friends may call at the home of Maureen and Robert Malovany, 340 Engle Street, Tenafly, N.J., on Friday, December 17, until sundown and Tuesday, December 21, from 2 to 8 pm.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Regional Hospice, 405 Main Street, Danbury CT 06810; Newtown VNA, 45 Main Street, Newtown CT 06470; or a charity of choice.

Arrangements were by the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown.
