Salt point, n.Y. âHyde Park Country Auctions conducts four cataloged Americana sales, with the focus on country antiques, during the year. The first sale of 2005 will exemplify the country theme and will include the partial contents of two early Hudson Valley farmhouses containing many country antiques, as well as a collection of historical ephemera from a private collector.
This sale will also include many fresh country antiques found throughout the Hudson Valley and New England, including many fine country furniture and accessories. In addition to country furnishings, a grouping of historical ephemera, including a signed military letter by Governor Dewitt Clinton found in the attic of the Dewitt estate, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., will also be offered.
Highlights of furnishing will include cupboards, blanket boxes, many quilts â including appliqué, Amish, friendship and wedding âcoverlets, stoneware, weathervanes, painted boxes, baskets âincluding several Native American â candlestands, worktables, a tavern table, a Sheraton sofa and loveseat, a Hepplewhite card table, early chests, sewing stands, a childâs Shaker bench, samplers, blue or white china, a rare set of seven Dutchess County historical plates, decoys, including a signed Ben Smith miniature merganser, theorems, a Seventeenth Century bible box, and an early Twentieth Century carved wooden eagle wall plaque in original paint with banner, âDonât Give Up The Ship.â
Historical ephemera will include Civil War photos and letters, autographs including a letter signed by Patrick Henry, 1763, an oil on canvas portrait of Wyatt Earp painted from life, a Springfield 1864 rifle, a Civil War surgeonâs canteen, Eighteenth Century maps including North America, a silver photo of Eisenhower as president signed P. Halsman
