Town officials Wednesday afternoon issued a reminder to remain vigilant about cold weather preparedness.

Ahead of a Nor’easter predicted to arrive Wednesday night and dump as much as 16 inches of snow before clearing, First Selectman Dan Rosenthal and Emergency Management Officials said they "do not want anyone to suffer complications from the cold.”

In addition to the snow, Connecticut is forecast to experience bitter cold overnight wind chill temperatures Wednesday and Thursday nights and Friday.

Residents are urged to be prepared for severe cold weather, to ensure personal safety and readiness. Appropriate action should also be taken to protect pets.

“We ask that you please check on any elderly or frail neighbors to be certain they are doing OK in this weather,” the town leaders also asked.

If significant outages occur from the snowstorm’s impact, the Town will be making provisions for charging electronic devices, warming and accommodating community need, and that will be communicated as needed, the statement further noted.

Important Numbers And Contact Information

If there is a Life Safety Emergency, call 911.

Newtown residents can register for CodeRED, offered through the Town for emergency notifications, at https://www.newtown-ct.gov/emergency-communications-center (click on CodeRED in the blue buttons along the left side of the page), or call 203-270- 4370 for assistance).

Residents can also register for Smart 911 — a private and secure system that provides information to dispatchers including name, age, gender, appearance, and medical conditions, plus other details in the event of an emergency — at newtown-ct.gov/emergency-management (like CodeRED, there is a button along the left side of the page for Smart911).

Check News and Announcements on the Town website, newtown-ct.gov. Residents can also register while visiting that page to have updates sent to them.

In the event of a power outage, contact Eversource at 800-286-2000 or eversource.com.

Eversource issued a press release on Tuesday, December 15, assuring customers that the utility was monitoring the storm.

“While continuing to operate under its COVID-19 pandemic plan and adhering to its strict social distancing and safety measures, the energy company will have line and tree crews pre-positioned around the state to respond to any damage or outages caused by this storm,” the release stated in part. “Eversource is also bringing in out-of-state crews to assist with restoring power if needed and has added customer care representatives to the company’s call centers to assist customers during the storm.”

Eversource customers who have signed up for text notifications from the company can also use their cell phone to send information to the utility via text. Text OUT to 23129 to report an outage; text STAT to 23129 to receive a status update.

A Nor'easter is on the way, and Town of Newtown officials have issued a reminder to remain vigilant before, during and after the storm.
