Gordon W. Platt, Jr, 71, formerly of Newtown, passed away unexpectedly at his home in The Bronx, New York, on November 23. He is the son of Gordon W. Platt, Sr, and Rita A. (Schirmer) Platt, both deceased, of Newtown.

Gordon “Bill” is survived by his brothers, John (Diane) and Gary (Maria) of Southbury, and Edward and Don of Melbourne, Fla. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister, Virginia (Platt) Newman, and nephew, Steven Platt.

Gordon was born September 7, 1949, in Danbury. He graduated valedictorian of Newtown High School in 1967. He received multiple awards and scholarships as a student, including DAR Award for excellence in American history, Carl De Groat Scholarship, Sippin Brothers Oil Company Scholarship, and the Barden Scholarship in physics. While in high school, he was also a writer for The Newtown Bee newspaper. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from the Syracuse University Newhouse School of Journalism.

Gordon had a love of writing and was a practicing journalist for over 50 years. After graduating college, he moved to New York City and worked in the journalism field covering finance and Wall Street. For more than the last 20 years he was a contributing writer for Global Finance magazine. He was a recognized authority on corporate and global finance as well as foreign exchange. He made many trips to the Middle East and met with presidents, prime ministers, and other high-level government officials in many countries reporting on the currency and economic outlooks.

In his spare time, he loved following his beloved Syracuse University basketball and football teams, as well as reading, attending museums, and enjoying the cosmopolitan offerings of New York City.

Gordon is buried at the Marlboro Memorial Cemetery in Marlboro, New Jersey.
