New York City is one of the major fashion capitals of the world, and Newtown High School graduate Olivia Phenix has just designed a piece of it.

She currently attends the fashion and business school LIM College, where she participated in designing and installing a holiday window display for the New York City Garment District Alliance.

Ms Phenix says she has always been passionate about style and took a fashion lab program at NHS.

She took that drive and is now on her way to earning a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in fashion merchandising with a minor in visual merchandising. She had the opportunity to create the exhibit as part of her visual presentation class.

"My final project was working with the class to create the window display," she explained.

The class, of roughly 20 students, was divided into three teams to come up with a display idea. The teams' plans were then voted on by classmates, and professors in the Visual Merchandising department got an opportunity to listen to all the proposals.

"My group's proposal was the winner; it was called 'Rose Colored Fantasy,'" Ms Phenix said about her display. "We were really inspired by the 'Woman in Gold' ['Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I' by Gustav Klimt]. We did that as our background... Everyone had their own tasks."

She used her skill set to work on the majority of the background design, while other team members focused on dressing the mannequin and making the props and flowers. During the semester, the students worked on smaller parts of the display in class and at the studio, as well as in their free time.

Ms Phenix and four of her classmates went to the actual instillation of the holiday window display to bring their vision to life. The display is open to the public to view at 215 West 38th Street in Manhattan, from now until the end of December.

Looking back at her experience, Ms Phenix said, "My favorite part was getting inspired by the 'Woman in Gold' painting and putting it into our interpretation of it for the window display. I also enjoyed learning with my professor, Marjorie Lee Woo, about how to position the mannequin and attract the audience."

She is excited to have the display up and to have people enjoy it. With more than eight million people living in New York City, her display is sure to attract the eye of many people walking by it.

After years of hard work and successfully installing her first window display in New York City, Ms Phenix is happy to confirm that she will be doing a full-time internship for the fashion designer Michael Kors next semester to complete her fashion degree.

"I am very excited I got an internship in product licensing," said Ms Phenix. "It's really what I want to do, and Michael Kors has an amazing internship program."

From Newtown to the fashion metropolis of New York City, Ms Phenix is just getting started making her impact in the world of business and fashion.
