PD Planning Sobriety Checkpoint

On Friday, December 16, the Newtown Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint within town.

The Newtown Police Department received grant funding from the Federal Highway Safety Program, which covers 75 percent of the allowable operational expenses for the project.

The sobriety checkpoint is a specialized DUI enforcement operation that is above and beyond the department’s routine patrol activities.

The objectives of the comprehensive DUI enforcement program are to reduce the number of impaired driving injuries and fatalities through increased high visibility DUI enforcement; and to communicate to the public the increased level of DUI enforcement so that drivers will perceive that the chance of being caught operating under the influence is too high a risk, therefore deterring the behavior.

All motorists traveling in both directions through the sobriety checkpoint will be stopped and briefly interviewed the detect those motorists who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
