Lions Honor Former Presidents
The Newtown Lions Club honored its current and past presidents at the organizationâs November 30 meeting. Fourteen of the 31 past presidents attended, including William Honan, who was president in 1964-65.
The Newtown Lions Club was organized on November 30, 1949, a chapter of the worldâs largest service organization, Lions Club International, which was founded in 1915. Nearly 1.35 million Lions members in 196 countries and geographic areas answer the needs that challenge the communities of the world. Lions tackle tough problems like blindness, drug abuse prevention, and diabetes awareness.
Lions improve the quality of life in their local communities by building parks, supporting hospitals, and establishing water treatment programs. The Newtown chapter sponsors various fundraising activities to benefit its projects, which have included the Treadwell Park playgrounds and Alâs Trail. This year the Lions are raising money to replace all the seats on the main floor of the Edmond Town Hall Theatre.
The local Lions chapter also sponsors the annual Lose the Litter Day.
At the November 30 meeting, the past presidents were asked to talk about their experiences and they all gave short speeches about how they saw the Lions Club during their tenure. William Honan is the oldest living president. Jon Christensen is the current president.
The Lions meet at the Fireside Inn on the second and fourth Wednesdays of most months. For information about membership call Mr Christensen at 426-8990.
