Informational Programs

On Transitioning Students

The guidance department, along with high school administrators, has been hosting a number of informational coffees geared to the parents of eighth grade students to enlighten them on the transition from middle school to the high school.

Newtown High School Director of Guidance Neil Culhane reassured parents that even though the transition is a big step, with some possible bumps along the way, students usually begin to feel comfortable by late fall in the new learning environment.

NHS Principal Arlene Gottesman and Assistant Principal Cathy Ostar reviewed with parents the ways in which the high school staff prepares to make the transition into high school life run more smoothly. Ms Ostar stressed that while she and fellow administrators Assistant Principal Jason Hiruo and Dean of Students Scott Clayton are often viewed as the disciplinarians of the building, they are really there to support and guide students in making wise choices and becoming involved in productive activities.

Guidance counselor Jan English told parents, “We are really here for the students. The central theme is about providing a caring environment. I had three kids go through here and they all did very well in college.” She continued by informing the parents that the students have advisors, not homeroom teachers,  when they attend high school, and that those advisors are there to guide them.

Ms English alerted parents to the fact that there are four report cards sent every year as well as progress reports. She emphasized, “If  you have questions, call and ask. If we don’t know the answer, we will find out for you.”

Mr Culhane told parents that the parental role in high school shifts. He said, “Your kids still need you in high school, too, but just in a different way. Our goal is to help our kids become responsible, good decisionmakers.”

High School PTA member Sara Beier addressed the parents, encouraging them to stay involved as their children move on to high school. She invited parents to attend and support PTA functions, which ultimately support the entire school and student body.

Parents were provided with handouts of upcoming dates for transition programs. An eighth grade orientation night is scheduled for Thursday, February 9, with a snow date set for February 16. A final informational coffee is scheduled for Thursday, December 22, from 7:30 to 8:30 am in the lecture hall.
