Jones Tree Farm Matriarch

Elisabeth Virginia Lee Jones, 81, died on December 3 in Shelton.

Mrs Jones was born September 28, 1924, in Dorchester, Mass. She resided her entire 61 years of married life with her husband, Philip, at Jones Tree Farm in Shelton.

She attended Massachusetts College (now UMass) majoring in food technology. She was proud to work at GE with Dr Tressler pioneering work in the frozen food industry. Mrs Jones devoted her energies to raising three children and always utilized her food technology talents. Her love of baking grew into a Christmas refreshment business at the Jones Tree Farm, which her husband had started after selling the dairy herd in 1967. She baked, packaged, and sold thousands of cookies and brownies each December as well as serving hot coffee and cocoa to warm the tree customers.

Through her grace and example she mentored her children in the values of caring for others. She had a quick wit and made many people smile. In 1979 her interest in freelance writing bore fruit with the first of several published articles. She shared her husband’s love of books, history, and ephemera.

In addition to her husband, Mrs Jones is survived her son Terry and his wife, Jean Crum Jones, also of Shelton; daughter Sandra Lee Jones and her husband, Dennis Lombard, of West Suffield; and son Daniel Jones of Denver, Colo. She leaves a great-grandson Jackson Philip Jones, also of Shelton. Her sister-in-law, Helen Lee of Concorde, N.H., and dear friend Diane DiMauro also survive her.
