All-State guard Taylor Simmons was limited to 15 points and dominating center Candace Williams was forced to foul out early in the fourth quarter and the Newtown High School girlsâ basketball team defeated Notre Dame for the first time in three meetings to improve to 2-1 on the year.
After a one-point loss to Bethel and a one-point win over Joel Barlow, the Lady Nighthawks faced a formidable challenge on Tuesday night when the Lady Lancers of Notre Dame came to town. But the âHawks had an answer for Simmons (Christie Iwanicki and Kacy Foehrenbach) and an answer for Williams (getting the big center to foul out) and turned in a significant win.
âThe win against Barlow really helped after the loss to Bethel,â said Foehrenbach, who canned 19 against Barlow (with a school-record five three-pointers) and 16 more against Notre Dame. âWe can feel good about ourselves, beating one of the best teams in the league.â
Iwanicki canned a game-high 21 points with the help of three three-pointers. Carly Curran added 12 and Ciara Simek chipped in with eight.
âEveryone said that Notre Dame was the biggest team in the league,â said Iwanicki, âbut we hustled and took advantage when we could.â
Iwanicki had 12 in the win over Barlow while Nowak added 15 with 11-of-15 shooting from the free throw line and tossed in a game-high 16 in the loss to Bethel last week.
