The local chapter of the Salvation Army has canceled tomorrow night’s Red Kettle Campaign bell ringing.

Sylvia Poulin contacted The Newtown Bee this afternoon to alert readers — and those who have volunteered for bell ringing on Friday, December 16 — to the decision to cancel tomorrow’s efforts due to expected inclement weather.

Those who had volunteered will be contacted, according to Ms Poulin.

Ringers had been scheduled for one hour shifts at multiple locations in town between 8 am and noon and then 4-8 pm.

Those who had volunteered will be contacted, according to Ms Poulin.

Weather permitting, ringers are scheduled to resume the annual fundraiser on Saturday, December 17. Volunteers will be outside Bagel Delight, Dunkin Donuts and Newtown General Store from 8 am to noon; Walgreens from 8 am until 4 pm; and Bottle Stop and Yankee Wines from noon to 4 pm.

Poulin and other local board members are hoping the public will be generous no Saturday, making up for the loss of Friday's efforts.

The local chapter recently reported that approximately $10,000 was raised through the 2021 Red Kettle Campaign efforts in Newtown. Of the donations received in Newtown, 90 cents of every dollar remains in town.

Steve Bennett and Pat Llodra covered bell ringing duties for the local Salvation Army chapter during the Sandy Hook tree lighting event on December 3. Due to expected inclement weather, all shifts on Friday, December 16 have been canceled. —Bee Photo, Hicks
