The fifth annual John Giorno Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament â normally held in November â will now be held on Sunday, January 7, at Newtown High School. The tournament is in honor of John Giorno, a âgood friendâ of Newtown basketball who succumbed to cancer in 2002. All proceeds go to the Giorno Family College Fund. Tournament competition is by age groups for both males and females. Age groups range from 8-9 years old through 30 and over. The format will be double elimination, so every team plays at least two games. Trophies are awarded for first and second place in each division. Each team should register four players. Register up until the day of the tournament. Register on the Newtown Youth Basketball Association web site, at the Park and Recreation Department, or through Newtown High School athletic director Greg Simon. Youth basketball coaches all have applications. All players will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Fees are on a per-team basis, so gather three friends and join the fun! Great Prizes to be raffled throughout the day, including autographs; pictures; posters; basketball and baseball autographs and memorabilia; NBA,WNBA merchandise like sports bags and clothing; NCAA college basketball merchandise; Yankee, Mets, Knicks, Nets and NCAA tickets; free weeks at the University of Boston Basketball camp and a free week at the Western CT Basketball Camp; NHS basketball stuff; NHS Nighthawk banners; weekend getaways and more. There will also be silent auction, knockout, free throw and half-court contests all day long. Food, snacks and drinks will also be available. The tournament will also be the focal point for another benefit endeavor, this one spearheaded by Will Mahony. Will has been involved with a goodwill organization of Bridgeport, where he and his fellow student athletes collect used soccer shoes for those kids who cannot afford them. We are asking any and all to stop by the Giorno tourney with your good-condition used basketball sneakers and soccer cleats.
