Congressmen Vie For Committee Posts
WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) â Democratic Congressmen-elect Joe Courtney and Chris Murphy were recommended Tuesday for appointments on two key US House committees, by a Democratic steering committee.
Courtney, who defeated three-term incumbent Republican incumbent Rob Simmons in the Second District, is in line for a seat on the House Armed Services committee. Simmons was a longtime member of the committee and an appointment there is considered critical to promote the districtâs defense interests, such as the US Naval Submarine Base and Electric Boat shipyard in Groton.
Murphy unseated 12-term Republican incumbent Nancy Johnson for the Fifth District seat. He was one of two freshmen to be recommended to the House Reform Committee when the 110th Congress convenes next year. The committee has broad jurisdiction over federal government management.
