Ashlar Names Dr Diane Smith

 Medical Director

Diane E. Smith, MD, has been named Medical Director for Ashlar of Newtown, a 156-bed skilled nursing facility located in Newtown. Thomas Gutner, President of Ashlar of Newtown, made the announcement this week.

“Dr Smith is an outstanding physician with an extensive and impressive background in the medical field. It is a pleasure working with her to provide the highest quality of care possible to our residents and patients,” Mr Gutner said.

Dr Smith has been a staff physician with Masonic Healthcare Center and Pyramid Primary Care Physicians in Wallingford since October 2005. Her medical career includes extensive work with hospice and elderly patients, in internal medicine, and in addiction medicine.

She has also worked as a registered nurse before becoming a physician. Prior to joining Masonicare, Dr Smith was Associate Medical Director for The Connecticut Hospice in Branford.

In her role as Medical Director, Dr Smith oversees the medical care provided to residents and patients at Ashlar of Newtown.

Dr Smith received a BS degree from the University of Rhode Island and an MD degree from the University of Vermont. She is board-certified in internal medicine and in hospice and palliative care. A resident of Hamden, she is a member of the Wallingford Chorus.

Ashlar of Newtown and Masonic Healthcare Center are affiliates of Masonicare, Connecticut’s leading not-for-profit provider of senior healthcare and retirement living. Other Masonicare affiliates include Ashlar Village of Wallingford and Connecticut Visiting Nurse Association and The Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut, which are statewide.
