Ring In The New Year At Wadsworth Mansion

MIDDLETOWN  — The Friends of Long Hill Estate and the Long Hill Estate Authority will host their ninth Annual New Year’s Day Open House on Tuesday, January 1, from 1 to 4 pm. The program is free and includes entertainment for visitors of all ages.

At 1:15 and 2:15 there will be guided nature walks along the Wadsworth Mansion trails. The walk will lead hikers along White Oak Lane, which was the original carriage entrance for the Wadsworths’ guests. Two spectacular brownstone walls, which are the most significant landscape features on the estate, line this lane.

Walkers on Dolly Lane will retrace a route that George Washington once used. Lastly on the hike will be a stop at the Vernal Pool.  The terrain is easy, but appropriate shoes are recommended.

Commencing at 2:00, visitors will be able to view the grounds from a horse drawn carriage. Duke and Diesel, Persherons from Cedar Knoll Farm, will once again provide an enchanted ride down the Wadsworth Mansion driveway.

For visitors wishing to enjoy the indoor festivities there will be musical entertainment in the West Ballroom. Tim Hayes, accompanied by Jon Swift, will perform with at 1:30. The Middletown High School  Chorale will sing at 2:30.

Ongoing throughout the afternoon, docents from the Friends of Long Hill Estate will lead guided tours of the Mansion providing a narrative that details the history of the Estate.  Furniture donated by the Wadsworth Family will be on display in the History Room. 

Light refreshments will be served in the East Ballroom.

This event is the first event in a series of celebrations commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the Wadsworth Mansion.  Construction of the house began in 1908.

Docent led historical tours are given every Wednesday, except when there is an event at the Mansion, between 2 and 4 pm. Call to confirm the tours are being held. Large groups and bus tours are also asked to call in advance.
