Playhouse Is Creating A New Tradition

WESTPORT — Last year Westport Country Playhouse put together a song-filled adaptation of Charles Dickens’ holiday classic A Christmas Carol, adapted and directed by Tazewell Thompson, the Playhouse’s artistic director. Performances will continue through December 29. The dynamic family event is suitable for ages 6 and up.

A Christmas Carol brings to the stage miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, the curmudgeon everyone loves to hate, plus the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, the festive Fezziwigs, and the darling Cratchit family with the ever-hopeful Tiny Tim. Part ghost story and part celebration, A Christmas Carol includes more than 20 holiday songs with dancing to propel this memorable tale of human transformation.

In a recent Newtown Bee review of the production, which includes one young resident from Newtown, theater reviewer Julie Stern called the show a “spectacular production that is … faithful to Dickens and musically glorious.”

The professional Equity cast includes Wynn Harmon as Scrooge, Howard Kaye as Marley, Forrest McClendon as Ghost of Christmas Past, Christianne Tisdale as Christmas Present and Mrs Fezziwig, Steven Stein-Grainger as Fezziwig, and Nick Cordileone as Bob Cratchit, and Mary Jo Mecca as Mrs Moggs.

Local cast members for A Christmas Carol, in some cases double cast, include actors from Darien, Fairfield, Redding, Ridgefield, Southport, Stamford, Weston, and Westport. Also included in the cast this year is Meaghan Elliot of Sandy Hook, playing Martha and a schoolgirl.

Curtain for A Christmas Carol are selected Wednesdays at 7 pm; selected Thursdays at 2 and 7 pm; Fridays at 7 pm; Saturdays and Sundays at 1 and 5:30 pm; and Christmas Eve at 11 am.

Tickets run from $25 to $48, with discounts for groups of ten or more.
