Inauguration Day
Inauguration Day
To the Editor:
The air was crisp and the sky was bright. Sun glistened on the dome atop the beautiful brick historic building. Festoons of red, white, and blue adorned the windows as poinsettia lined the stairway to the front entrance. Boughs of holly, evergreens, red ribbons, roses and poinsettia graced the halls. No, this is not a passage from a Christmas story or the scene of a Norman Rockwell painting. It was our own town hall on Saturday, December 1, also known as Inauguration Day in Newtown.
The organization of the Inauguration Ceremony was the inspiration of Mae Schmidle. As a former town clerk, Mae has years of experience and knowledge in these affairs. She had a vision of what could be and stepped up to make a beautiful Inauguration Day into a reality. Mae envisioned everything from the decorating of Edmund Town Hall, to the program, commemorative calendars, and postcards.
For those of you who were witness to the day, you will agree that our town hall never looked lovelier. That is because it was decorated with care and devotion by a group of dedicated caring people. Marcy Becker, Clark Kathan, and Tom Mahoney organized and executed the hanging of the building ornamentation. Marcy has a keen eye for decorating and her talent showed.
Mae, the chair of the committee, asked for volunteers to help her. A handful of energetic and enthusiastic residents stepped up to help. Gianine Crowell, IPN, chaired and organized the decorating the Mary Hawley Room, the tables for food and beverages, organized all the beverages and the stage for the inauguration ceremony. Sherri Davis, Donna Monteleone Randle, Ruby and Ken Johnson, IPN, were her support as extra hands and arms. Anna Wiedemann, DTC, organized all the food that everyone shared after the ceremony, and coordinated the audio and video in conjunction with Newtown High School.
Thank you again to Mae for inspiring such a great day; may there be many more!Â
