Help Bridge

The Communications Gap

To the Editor:

It is apparent to me that, at the very least, there is poor communication between the selectmen, the Legislative Council, and the people of Newtown.

I am certain there would have been more public involvement (on both sides) at the selectmen’s meeting last week had the issue of the new town hall been publicized in the meeting’s agenda.

Since the townspeople have been denied an opportunity to publicly debate this issue or to directly and specifically vote on it, given the current circumstances our town faces, I have created a system whereby the townspeople can vote. The results, while “nonbinding” of course, can be presented to the Board of Selectmen, giving them “compelling information” to either move forward or delay the project.

Please e-mail your vote to: voteyes@charter.net with your first and last name in the subject line (used only for purposes of preventing duplicates) if you agree with moving forward with a new town hall, given past, current, and future tax implications; voteno@charter.net with your first and last name in the subject line (used only for the purposes of preventing duplicates) if you agree with delaying the project until a full review of town needs and fiscal implications is conducted.

I will tally the votes and forward them to the Board of Selectmen and the Legislative Council two weeks after the publication of this letter.

Thank you.
