Sense Of Humor And Passion For Life
Dermot âDerryâ J. Kenning, 73, a 31-year resident of Bethel, died December 9 at Candlewood Valley Rehab, New Milford, surrounded by his loving family. Mr Kenning was born on February 3, 1934, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to James and Mary Kenning.
In addition to his loving wife of 49 years, Pat, he is survived by his five children, Jim Kenning and his wife, Virginia, of Newtown, Paul Kenning and his wife, Margie, of Bethel, Mary Pat Russo and her husband, John, of Brookfield, Christine Russo of Danbury, and Terence Kenning of Bethel; a sister, Adrienne Garvey of Brooklyn; and his cherished grandchildren, Quinn, Sydney, David, Colin, Erin, Samantha, Sean, and Eamon.
He attended St Theresa Elementary School, St George Academy High School in Manhattan, and New York University. At age 17, he began working for Texaco Inc, where he remained until his retirement in July 1993. In an enjoyable 43-year career at Texaco, he held numerous positions in the Marine Department. The last position was as the supervisor of tanker chartering.
On June 14, 1958, he married the former Patricia King and raised five children. He moved with his family from Brooklyn to Bethel in December 1976. He and his wife were active members of St Maryâs Parish in Bethel.
Mr Kenning had a great sense of humor and varied interests. He was a lover of opera and a passionate New York Giants football fan. In retirement, he traveled extensively with his wife to visit family overseas. He enjoyed his summers in Cape Cod with his grandchildren. His story telling ability was unmatched. The Kenning family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the caregivers on D wing at Candlewood Valley for the exceptional care they extended to our loving father during his stay. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on December 13 at St Maryâs Church in Bethel. Burial was in St Maryâs Cemetery.
Contributions in Mr Kenningâs name may be made to Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut, 405 Main Street, Danbury CT 06810.
