âTis the season when the house has the warm, delicious smells that the holiday goodies baking in the kitchen. But, what about the canine friend who stays with you keeping you company while you mix, stir and prepare? Why not treat him to a tasty, easy to make dog biscuits?
Here are a few recipes for dog treats your dog will like. the advantage of making dog treats are they are fresh without preservatives.
Dog Cookies
¾ cup wheat germ
¾ cup powdered milk
1 egg
1 jar baby meat (liver or beef)
½ jar water
Mix well and drop on a cookie sheet. The cookies should be about the size of a quarter. Bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees or 7½ minutes on high in microwave.
Oatmeal-Wheat Germ Biscuits
3 cups whole wheat or rye flour
3 cups oatmeal
½ cup regular wheat germ
6 tbls melted bacon drippings or margarine
¼ cup molasses
1 cup evaporated milk
1 cup water
Mix dry ingredients together. add remaining ingredients and blend until well mixed. Dough will be stiff. Chill for ½ hour. Make rounded teaspoons of dough and roll into balls. Flatten and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 300 degrees for one hour.
Homemade Dog Biscuits
3½ cups all purpose flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup rye flour
1 cup corn meal
2 cups cracked wheat
½ cup dry milk
4 tsp salt
1 pkg dry yeast
2 cups liquid chicken stock or chicken broth
1 egg
1 tsp mil to brush on top
Combine all dry ingredients but yeast. In separate bowl, combine yeast with ½ cup of warm water. To this, add chicken stock. Add the liquid to the dry ingredients. Knead for three minutes. If dough is too stiff, add an egg or more liquid. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Roll dough out on floured board to ½-inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutter. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and brush the tops with egg and milk, bake for 45 minutes. Turn oven off and let sty in oven overnight to become bone hard.
