Several events came down to the wire in stroke for stroke finishes, but the Newtown Torpedoes couldn’t catch Southbury last Saturday at the Newtown High School pool. Southbury came out ahead, 355-240.

There were some exceptional performances, however, and perhaps none more exceptional than in the girls’ 11-12 age group where the Torpedo managed a clean sweep in every event. Maggie Hemingway, who has yet to meet a formidable challenger this season, once again streaked away from the field in the individual medley and went on to take the 50 free without breaking her stride. Samantha O’Donnell and Abby Atkinson were both double winners showing tremendous abilities this season. A stellar performance in the fly came, too, from new team member Caitlin Malloy.

In the boys’ 13-14 age group, veteran swimmer Jay Shunter, clearly demonstrated his competitive edge and all round ability to become the only triple winner of the day.

Other double-event winners showing impressive improvement were: Taylor Smith (8 and under girls), Briana Berg (10 and under girls), Conor Deveney (8 and under boys), Luke Fiore (10 and under boys), and Anthony Fiore (11 and 12 boys).

The Torpedoes will travel to Bristol on Sunday, December 17.
