Congregation Adath Israel of Newtown and Congregation B’nai Israel of Danbury are pleased to announce a joint Hanukkah celebration to mark the first night of the holiday on Sunday, December 18. The celebration will be held at Congregation Adath Israel, 115 Huntingtown Road in Newtown.

The festivities will begin indoors at 3 pm, at which time guests can enjoy holiday treats such as latkes (potato pancakes), jelly donuts, and hot cider.

In addition, there will be Hanukkah stories, and activities for all ages such as crafts and games. Children will receive goody bags.

The celebration will wrap up shortly after 4:30, when the festivities will move outdoors, and the first candle of the menorah will be lit followed by singing of traditional Hanukkah songs.

It is a community-wide event. Residents of all ages are invited to join the members of the two synagogues for the celebration.

Reservations are not needed, but additional information is available by contacting Congregation Adath Israel at 203-426-5188 or office@congadathisrael.org, or Congregation B’nai Israel at 203-792-6161 or cbi193clap@gmail.com.

Congregation Adath Israel is again presenting a seasonal display of menorahs at C.H. Booth Library on Main Street. Two of the seven-branched candelabrum in this year’s presentation are shown here. The Huntingtown Road synagogue is also planning its first community menorah lighting — this time with a co-host — since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. —Bee Photo, Hicks
