Children Invited To Soccer And Santa Event At Youth Academy

By Kendra Bobowick

The D’Amico family has a holiday gift especially for children this year.

Rather than dropping something into a stocking or using wrapping paper and a bow, the D’Amicos are inviting residents to Soccer and Santa at Newtown Youth Academy on Saturday, December 19, between 9:30 am and 1 pm.

“As a family we try to do something around the holidays and this year we wanted something for the kids in the community,” said Marybeth D’Amico. Her father-in-law and youth academy owner Peter D’Amico had hoped to “tie in a youth event especially in the winter; it will be nice for the kids to play and run around if they’re itching to get out,” she said.

Santa and Soccer activities will include pictures with Santa. Parents should bring their own cameras and “snap away!” states the event flyer. Snacks, crafts, music by Sabrina’s Encore Productions, soccer lessons, inflatable obstacle courses, and prizes are all on the agenda.

While the event is free, a $5 donation will provide a chance to win a prize donated through local businesses. With the money, Ms D’Amico explained, “Hopefully we can start a little fund and do this each year.” Children also will receive a gift from Santa.

Guests can also participate in Kick For Nick by bringing a new or used soccer ball to the event. The gesture will help continue efforts started by the late PFC Nick Madaras, who had wanted to provide soccer balls to the children he met while serving in Iraq. Write on the ball, “PFC Nick Madaras.” The youth academy has taken up the cause that is growing in popularity.

According to KickForNick.org, “[Nick] wanted to give the balls to children as a gesture of good will.” Unfortunately, he was killed overseas in 2006.

“He wanted to give them soccer balls, but he never made it home,” Ms D’Amico said.

Newtown Youth Academy is at 10 South Fairfield Circle, on the Fairfield Hills campus. For additional information, contact Marybeth D’Amico at damicoteach@yahoo.com or NYA at 203-304-1826.
