The Taxpayers' Worst Nightmare
The Taxpayersâ Worst Nightmare
To the Editor:
I have never been more disappointed in our town officials in all my years of living in Newtown. We are now faced with the potential of a very large increase in our taxes because these folks believe it is in our best interest to purchase Fairfield Hills.
I thought one of the reasons the officials wanted to encourage development in Newtown was to bring in tax revenue. How is buying Fairfield Hills going to contribute to our tax base? It appears that if this property is purchased by the town, it will be used for purposes that will contribute very little to our tax base, i.e. schools, open space, etc.
I believe that the purchase of Fairfield Hills will be the taxpayersâ worse nightmare. Large sums of money will have to be spent on environmental issues such as asbestos abatement and building code corrections, etc. No town should be involved in the real estate business. Taxpayers should not have to fund these outrageous ventures.
