James Cooke
James âMelvinâ Cooke, 87, of Brandy Mill, S.C., died December 8 at his residence.
He was the father of Patricia L. Happel of Newtown.
He was born April 22, 1913, in New Canaan, a son of the late James Bernard and Minnie (Uzell) Cooke.
He moved to Myrtle Beach in 1998 from Woodbury. Mr Cooke was a member of the Cornell Club of New York where he served as a member of the Committee on Admissions from 1970-1974, and elected vice president of the Board of Governors from 1975-1988. He worked for 23 years at Newsweek magazine and served as sergeant major during World War II, in which he was honored with several service medals.
Survivors include two sons, James G. Cooke of Wallingford, and William M. Cooke of Woodbury; two other daughters, Barbara C. Heller of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Mary Ellen Waldmann of Gaylordsville; and four grandchildren, Christine Lindblom of Columbia, S.C., Michael Heller of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Dana Happel of Newtown, and Richard Cooke of Wallingford.
