The Newtown High School boys’ and girls’ swim teams got together for another battle of the sexes last Friday.

But this time it was to benefit the newly-formed scholarship in memory of former teammate and swimmer Greg Chion, who passed away recently after a year-long fight with leukemia.

Chion would have been a captain on the 2000-2001 boys’ team under coach Brian Reiff.

Chion was diagnosed with leukemia early last swim season and immediately underwent treatment. His prospects were deemed good at the time and, later, he was even able to return to school.

About 50 people turned out for the swim meet last Friday and with the admission (by donation), the 50-50 drawing, and the raffling of door prizes the meet was able to raise a nice bit of money. Any further donations can be sent to Newtown High School in care of the Greg Chion Scholarship.

The swimmers attacked the meet much like any other meet and a couple of people – like Kane Kunst – challenged some school records.

The meet was even a little heavy on the breaststroking events, too, since it was Chion’s main stroke.
