Reed Intermediate School students bonded and had fun competing against each other in the school’s annual Color Games event, which was held Monday, November 11 through Friday, November 15.

Reed’s Color Games, which is run by the school’s PTA, is a week-long event where fifth and sixth graders face off in friendly competitions that foster teamwork, kindness, and community throughout the school.

Students are placed in either Blue House or Green House at RIS, so students accrued points all week long through activities in their classrooms and earned points for their respective house. The goal of the event, according to RIS PTA member and Head of Color Games Emily Howard, is to bring the students together and give everyone a chance to show their school spirit.

“It’s just fun for them to let loose and have healthy camaraderie and competition,” Howard said. “The kids have a great time, and it really gives them a chance to have fun and work together.”

Color Games culminated in two special “grand finale” events, one for fifth graders on November 14 and one for sixth graders on November 15. Each evening had students form groups of ten and accrue points at different stations set up between the school’s gym and cafeteria. There were 19 different stations overall, each with their own unique game or activity for students to play.

There were a couple of parent volunteers at every station, who would help students and tell them what to do. Groups had four minutes to play the game before moving on to the next station. After a group finished all the activities in either the gym or cafeteria, they would get a brief snack break in the school’s lobby and then move on to the next location.

The points for the event would get totaled between the grades in Blue and Green House. Their admission for the grand finale event was a food donation to FAITH Food Pantry.

RIS Principal Matt Correia excitedly welcomed students to the annual event, and reminded them of the rules of the event. He encouraged everyone to be kind to one another, and to focus on having fun.

“You all did a really great job of getting it together and being positive all week long,” Correia told sixth graders on the November 15 grand finale. “It’s a competition, but it’s a friendly competition, so ... there’s nothing worth getting upset about tonight. We want you all to have fun out there.”

Students were already chatting away with one another before the games officially kicked off. Everyone excitedly filled into the cafeteria and gym, trying to make groups and figure out what station they wanted to start with. Students went all out in showing support and enthusiasm for the event. Some simply wore either a blue or green shirt, while others sported bedazzled skirts, star-shaped glasses, bandanas, or colored paint on their face to represent their respective house.

When the grand finale kicked off, students cheered each other on as they tried to complete the station’s respective activity. One station has students string as many Froot Loops as possible onto a pipe cleaner with one hand in order to make a “cereal bracelet.” Another station had students go through a clothing relay, where they had to put on a certain number of accessories as fast as possible.

From throwing plastic spiders at a board covered in webs to tossing hacky sacks onto a ladder, there were a wide variety of activities that kept students on their toes throughout the entire evening.

Color Games is only one of many that Reed has for its students throughout the year, but it is certainly a highlight for students, staff, and parents alike. While Blue House ultimately won, the event was really close between the two houses and brought the students closer together. Above all else, Color Games continues to be a celebration for Reed and its community, and a way for students, parents, and staff to have fun.
