Girls 6th

Brookfield 33, Newtown 16 – Colleen Cunningham scored eight points and Maggie Donohue added six as Newtown fell to Brookfield. Kristen Errico chipped in with two points while Alex Grant, Cady Jackman, Casey-Rose Kearns and Sam Whitley sparked the defense.

Fairfield PAL 38, Newtown 23 – Colleen Cunningham and Maggie Donohue combined for 14 points in a loss to Fairfield. Kristen Errico, Cady Jackman and Sam Whitley combined for nine more while Jennifer Smith and Alex Grant played well.

 

Girls 7th

Newtown 40, Ridgefield 37 – Sara Kelley scored 15 points (going 7-of-9 from the free throw line) while Jennifer Daily and Kaitlin Marsden each chipped in with six points as Newtown opened the 2004-05 season with a win. Nicole Elias and Marsden dragged down eight rebounds apiece.

Boys 7th

Newtown 74, New Milford 59 – Newtown rallied from a 13-point, first-quarter deficit to earn the win. George Zaruba and Ralph Sergiovanni both finished with 13 points and double-digit rebounds.  Kyle Kromberg, Max Paynter, Peter Young, Dan Greenwood and Nick Nazer created numerous defensive turnovers that initiated scoring opportunities for the team. Dan Lynch finished with 10 points and initiated the rally with a key three-point shot. Casey Tenney and Andy Lapple combined for 16 points.

Newtown 71, Southbury 23 – Kyle Kromberg (14), Peter Young (12), Ralph Sergiovanni (10) and Andy Lapple (10) scored in double digits as Newtown trounced Southbury. The locals out-scored Southbury 32-3 in the first half alone. George Zaruba (nine points), Nick Nazer, and Casey Tenney provided strong support on the boards. While Max Paynter, Dan Lynch and Dan Greenwood led the team in creating defensive turnovers.

Boys 8th

Newtown 47, Bridgeport 38 – John Grimaldi scored 14 points and Cole Depuy added 10 more as Newtown earned the win. Newtown had to rally from a four-point, third-quarter deficit for the win.

Danbury PAL 41, Newtown 37 – John Grimaldi scored 13 points and Ricky Gallucci added six, but a turnover with 60 seconds left to play sealed Newtown’s fate. Connor Collier chipped in with five points.

Fairfield Wakeman 79, Newtown 59 – Kurt Nacewicz poured in 18 points and Cole Depuy added 12 more but undermanned Newtown (with only seven players) fell.

Girls 8th

Newtown 31, Weston 20 – Jen Brewer scored eight points and made five steals to lead Newtown to the win. Nora Lynn Shimko chipped in with seven points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Kasey Schulz sped up the pace on both ends of the floor and had a fine game.

Newtown 52, Ansonia 26 – Athleticism is what helped the eighth-grade girls overpower “Da Fam” from Ansonia.  The team created several turnovers with their full-court press and were able to convert on several of these opportunities.  Ansonia was only able to score 12 points in the second half.  The team was led by a strong offensive and defensive performance by Nora Lynn Shimko, who registered 25 points and 9 steals.  Kasey Schulz and Rachel Taback combined for 14 points.  Jordyn Good, Jen Brewer and Kayla Harrington combined to pull down 23 rebounds.

Junior Boys

Yellowjackets 46, Lakers 37 – Brian Reszoly canned 16 points and Joe Fedak added eight to lead the ‘Jackets to the win. Ed White dished off five assists while Dylan Kelleher was strong off the glass. Mehul Garjar popped in five points and played tough defense. For the Lakers, Nick Tarantino scored 10 points while Brian Grimes anchored the defense and Brendan O’Connell played well.

Hawkeyes 55, Knicks 26 – Matt Baier scored 15 points and Jake Wolf added 13 as the Hawkeyes won their 2004-05 season opener. Daniel Clement had a solid game.

Bullets 37, Heat 31 – Rob O’Donnell scored 15 points to lead the Bullets to the win. Chris Dennis (six assists), Kevin O’Connell (eight steals) and Andy Gordon (six rebounds) had good floor games. For the Heat, Steve Osmolik popped in nine points while Hiram Orama, John Fracker and John Aminti played well.

Huskies 49, Jaspers 48 – Joe Cappiello scored 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds and stole eight balls as the Huskies nipped the Jaspers. Zack Brazo and AJ Ritchie popped in 11 points apiece with Brazo also grabbing 10 boards. For the Jaspers, Steven Musco scored 15 points and Jason Kostecki added nine.

Wildcats 66, Nuggets 51 – Jake DeVellis scored 45 points and David Hutchison added 12 more as the Wildcats out-gunned the Nuggets. Ethan Johnson grabbed 18 rebounds and Tyler Reszoly sparked the defense. For the Nuggets, Matt Narel and Harrison Gillis popped in 14 points apiece. Eric Hoffman, Tucker Schmidt and Chris Pace (eight rebounds) had fine floor games.

Celtics 35, Eagles 27 – Joe Selezan canned 12 points to lift the Celtics to the win. Ben Mahoney and Trevor Todd played well. For the Eagles, Keith McGrath popped in eight points while Kyle O’Connor, Robbie Phillips, and Adam Schankman had solid floor games.

Rockets 45, Nighthawks 21 – Josh Baron and Ben Miles scored 12 points apiece and Ryan Goodridge added 11 more to lead the Rockets to the easy win. Spencer Gregoire and Dan Spencer had strong performances. For the ‘Hawks, Robbie Blanc and Paul Murphy scored six points apiece while Andrew Matsis and Michael Herring anchored the defense.

Junior Girls

Celtics 33, Knicks 27 – Lyndsey Burns scored 10 points to lead the Celtics to victory.  Laura Newberry led the team in assists.  Rebecca Castegner and Nicole Escoda also played well.  The Knicks were led by Danielle Rubino with eight points.  Meredith LaPerch led the team in assists and Katherine Stanton led in rebounds.

Bulls 27, Pacers 24 – Kelly Sullivan led the Bulls with 10 points while Michelle Davies led the team in assists.  Megan Sajovic and Ashley Kuligowski also played well for the Bulls.  Meagan Kelly led the Pacers with eight points while Lindsay Laub pulled down eight rebounds.  Emily Weber also played well for the Pacers.

Sixers 21, Huskies 14 – Erin Fish scored eight points and Hannah DeFlumeri chipped in four more to lead the Sixers to victory.  Kaley Kruger, Katie Pessin and Taylor Ansbro played well for the Sixers.  The Huskies were led by Lisa Vendel with eight points and Bryony Langdon with eight rebounds.  Scarlett O’Sullivan also played well with three assists for the Huskies.

Intermediate Girls

Nighthawks 22, Rim Rockers 20 – Shannon Paproski scored eight points and Laurel Speed made five steals to lead the Nighthawks to the win. For the Rockers, Ali Pliszka scored 11 points and Tori Picerno made six steals. Jade Mather, Carly Gerhman and Emily Rowe had strong games.

Liberty 31, Huskies 26 – Chelsea Gray and Ashley Perry combined for 17 points to lead the Liberty to the win. Samantha Steimle also played well. For the Huskies, Allie Korchman canned 12 points while Emma Kingsley, Aria Brownell and Christie Iorfino had solid games.

Da Bears 36, Shamrocks 24 – Andrea Nazer poured in 22 points as Da Bears rolled to their first win. Courtney Amaral, Kaitlin Voswinke and Emma Fiore played well. For the ‘Rocks, Kelly Anne Brophy popped in eight points while Audra Sarna, Deanna Tassinari and Julie Ficks had strong floor games.

Suns 27, Da Bulls 22 – Kelly O’Connor scored 11 points and Marilyn LaCroce added 10 to lift the Suns to the win. Lainey Audet scored a decisive basket with one minute remaining. Stefanie Clavelle and Allison Blume were strong off the boards. For Da Bulls, Lauren Meyer scored 12 points and Taylor Benson added four. Jenna Bonnacorso dragged down five rebounds.

Midget Girls

Purple Panthers versus Wolverines – Jessica Gibbons, Lauren Sarna, Kerry Scallon and Mary Joe Rossi played well for the Panthers while Kelly O’Connell, Julia Trudell, Madeline Fletcher and Emily Davis sparked the Wolverines.

Huskies versus Fighting Irish – Sarah Stofko, Bridget Power, Rachel McGuire and Kathryn D’Alessandro led the Huskies as Meghan Logan, Taylor Brady, Cassie Ekstrom and Shannon O’Gorman powered the Irish.

Golden Bears versus Fireballs – Claire Miles, Emily Clark, Katherine Clark and Lea Tassinari played well for the Bears as Faaria Ansari, Sara Rose Haselburger, Amanda Crowell and Kiely Kuligowski anchored the Fireballs.

Ballhogs versus Devils – Danielle Shine, Stephanie Roman, Julia LeBlanc and Tess Murphy sparked the ‘Hogs as Dale Shearin, Emily Grimes, Shaina Stamp and Mary Beth Semosky powered the Devils.

Yellowjackets versus Funky Monkeys – Jenny Indelicato, Erin Kenning, Alexa Reyes and Courtney Campbell played well for the ‘Jackets as Tressa Scott, Sarah Read, Emily Cannavo and Lauren Meyer played well for the Monkeys.
