Police Commission Reelects Mattegat As Chairman
By Andrew Gorosko
Police Commission members this week reelected Republican Carol Mattegat to another one-year term as the agencyâs chairman.
Republican commission member Richard Simon nominated Ms Mattegat to the post at a December 7 commission session. Panel members approved the nomination without opposition.
Besides Ms Mattegat and Mr Simon, Democratic member Gerald Finnegan and Republican member Duane Giannini were present at the meeting. Democratic member Robert Connor was absent.
Mr Simon said the panel has operated smoothly in the year since Ms Mattegat assumed the chairmanship, so he nominated her for another one-year term.
Ms Mattegat became chairman after Republican James Reilly left the agency. Mr Reilly had been the chairman for five years.
Mr Simon also nominated Mr Finnegan to another one-year term as the commissionâs vice chairman. The motion was seconded and approved without opposition.
The Police Commission oversees the operations of the townâs 43-member police department, which is headed by Chief Michael Kehoe.
The commission creates and implements regulations for the police department. The panel hires, promotes, suspends, and terminates police department members. Police Commission members are elected to four-year terms by voters.
