The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.
The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships.
If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP, the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060, or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.
DuPont Challenge Science Essay Awards Program â High school students who are US citizens are eligible to participate in this annual science essay contest. The top prize in each category is a $1,500 scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to Space Center Houston. The Career Center has basic information. Complete details are available at www.glcomm.com/dupont. Essays must be postmarked by January 17.
Calgon TMA Scholarship â High school senior girls who will be at least 18 years of age by June 23, 2005, are eligible to apply for this national scholarship where the top award is $7,000; $10,000 in runner-up scholarships will also be awarded. Judging is based on GPA and online responses to short essay questions. Financial need is not a consideration. Recipients must be matriculating at a four-year accredited college or university as of September 1. The official entry form is available online at www.takemeaway.com. The competition closes on February 28.
Global Automotive Aftermarket Symposium Scholarship â Scholarships of $1,000 will are available to high school graduates who will enroll in a college/university or vocational technical school. Priority will be given to those who pursue a career in the automotive aftermarket industry. Information and applications are available in the Career Center. All applications must be postmarked by March 31.
Best Buy Scholarships â Three graduating high school seniors in each US Congressional district will be selected to receive a scholarship of $1,000 or $2,000 from the Best Buy Childrenâs Foundation. Selections are made based on community service and academic achievement. Students must be entering an accredited US college, university, or technical school in the fall immediately following graduation. Online applications for 2005 will be posted at www.bestbuy.com on January 2. The application deadline is February 15.
Educational Communications Scholarship Foundation â The foundation will award more than 100 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $6,000 to high school seniors from across the nation. All students must be legal residents of the United States and have taken the SAT or ACT. Details are available in the Career Center or at www.whoswho-highschool.com. Applications must be received by May 15.
Lucent Global Science Scholarship Program â This national competition will identify and reward the academic excellence and achievements of 24 high school students in math, science, and technology. A $5,000 cash award will be presented to each of these graduating seniors along with the opportunity to participate with researchers in a Global Summit for one week in July and also be considered for an internship at Lucent Technologies. Applications must be received by February 28. Applications and guidelines are available in the Career Center.
