December 15 âSingle Shardâ Book Discussion Planned
The Young Adult Department at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street in Newtown, will host a book discussion for readers in grades 5-8 on Wednesday, December 15.
This monthâs featured book is A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park.
The discussion will be in the Story Room and will run from 4 to 5 pm.
Copies of the book are available in the libraryâs Young Adult area.
In Ms Parkâs book, Tree-ear, a 13-year-old orphan in medieval Korea, is fascinated with the potterâs craft. He wants nothing more than to watch master potter Min at work, and he dreams of making a pot of his own someday.
When Min takes on Tree-ear as his helper, Tree-ear is elated â until he finds obstacles in his path: the backbreaking labor of digging and hauling clay, Minâs irascible temper, and his own ignorance. Nevertheless, Tree-ear is determined to prove himself.
A Single Shard was the winner of a 2002 Newbery Medal. Each year the Newbery Medal is awarded by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American childrenâs books published the previous year. The Newbery Medal, along with The Caldecott Medal, is one of the most prestigious awards in childrenâs literature. The medals honor outstanding writing and illustration of childrenâs books published in the U.S. during the previous year.
