To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its release, The Sound of Music will be screened at Edmond Town Hall on Sunday, December 13, presented by Newtown Cultural Arts Commission.

The 3 pm matinée will feature the sing-along version, and the 7 pm show will be the standard movie in high definition.

(Note the matinee show is one hour earlier than originally announced, due to the movie’s running time.)

Tickets are $2 and will be available to purchase in advance at the box office prior to all regularly scheduled movies. Edmond Town Hall is at 45 Main Street.

The five-time Academy Award-winner — including Best Picture and Best Director for Robert Wise — was the highest grossing movie of its day.  Based on Maria von Trapp’s 1949 memoir, The Story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, Paramount purchased the movie rights to the story two years before the Broadway musical debut.

Series coordinator Jen Rogers feels the film is “perfect to share with younger generations, especially in the historic atmosphere of the Edmond Town Hall Theatre.  Julie Andrews is enchanting and her voice is undeniable.”

The final Sunday Cinema Series offering for 2015 will be the family musical The Sound of Music, celebrating its 50th anniversary.
