The Newtown sixth-grade girls travel basketball team won the Joe Coppo New Canaan Invitational Tournament this past weekend.

The tournament is named for one of the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks, a man who was a huge part of youth sports in New Canaan.

The local girls won four games, going undefeated, and finished tied with New Canaan. Newtown earned the tournament title on point-differential.

This came as the In-Town program officially opened the 2005-06 season with a huge slate of games last weekend.

Girls 8th

Newtown 47, Westport 17 – Sara Kelley  scored 14 points while Jennifer Daily and Kate Bowen combined for 14 points and 12 assists to lead the Hawkeyes over Westport. Meghan Bridges, Ally Modzelewski and Kaitlin Marsden each chipped in four points as the Hawkeyes improved to 2-0 in the Fairfield County Basketball League.

Girls 7th

Newtown 38, Redding 15 – Maggie Donohue led a balanced offensive attack with 10 points while Marilyn LaCroce netted eight and Christie Iorfino six to lead Newtown to the win. Three other players added four points apiece. The defense was outstanding, led by Donohue’s five steals and great interior play by Colleen Cunningham and Chelsea Gray.

Girls 6th

Newtown 34, Weston 11 – Newtown jumped out to a 21-2 lead on Weston at halftime and coasted to victory.  Jessica Lynch, Nora Murphy and Meghan Condon led a very balanced scoring effort in the win.

Newtown 31, Wilton 14 – Alyssa Finkenstadt scored 12 points to lead Newtown to the win. Abbey Doski added six while Newtown defense, led by Kendall Svanda and Arianna Papaj, stifled Wilton’s strong offense.

Newtown 43, Darien 18 – Newtown dominated in all areas of the game in a rematch of last year’s FCBL semi-final, which Newtown won by a point over Darien. In this one, Jessica Jowdy led all scorers with 10 points while Molly Mahony and Abbey Doski combined for 17.  Newtown’s full court, pressing defense, led by Riley Wurtz, forced 23 Darien turnovers.

Newtown 29, Ridgefield 18 – A strong second-half performance led by Abbey Doski, Jessica Jowdy, Alyssa Finkenstadt, Jessica Lynch and Riley Wurtz enabled Newtown to earn the tournament title. Nora Murphy played exceptional defense in shutting down Ridgefield’s top scorer, holding her to eight points.

Newtown 30, Brookfield 8 (League  game) – Newtown jumped out to an 18-2 halftime lead and coasted to victory. Meghan Condon led the way with eight rebounds and strong defense while Abbey Doski, Jessica Jowdy and Alyssa Finkenstadt led the offense.

Junior Girls

Knicks 22, Pacers 19 – Deanna Tassinari scored six points to lead the Knicks to the win. Brady Eggleston played well on D. For the Pacers, Brittany Wiberg scored 11 points and Katie Hunt added four. Taylor Johnson (six steals) and Sam Dinnan (seven rebounds) had strong floor games.

Celtics 22, Kids On The Court 10 – Gina Pisacreta and Nicole Escoda scored six points apiece to lift the Celtics to the win. Samantha Lockhart, Hannah Bausch-Gould and Emma Fiore played well. For Kids, Ali Pliszka and Shannon Paproski scored four points apiece. Meaghan Wilson and Meghan Gibbons played well on D.

Huskies 29, Celtics 15 – Lisa Vendel and Stephanie Suhoza powered the offense in the Huskies’ win. Victoria Picerno and Scarlett O’Sullivan played well. For the Celtics, Hannah Bausch-Gould scored six points while Jennifer Smith grabbed five rebounds. Casey Router, Hannah DeFlumeri and Emma Fiore had strong games.

Gaels 26, Bulls 25 – Meredith LaPerch scored 12 points and Michelle Rahtelli added six more as the Gaels nipped the Bulls. Annie Fletcher also played well. For the Bulls, Kaley Krueger and Jenna Bonaccorso scored eight points apiece as Carolyn Fagan (six assists), Becky Lipnick (four steals) and Margaret Kearney (six rebounds) had solid floor games.

Junior Boys

Red Devils 39, Hawkeyes 15 – Jeff DiNicola canned 18 points and Joe Fedak grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Devils to the win. Nick Neves dished off seven assists and Dale Neves made eight steals. For the Hawkeyes, Tucker Schmidt popped in six points while Chris Haylon, Eric Hoffman and Robert Maschler played well.

Red Devils 43, Deamon Deakins 20 – Joe Fedak scored 14 points, Jeff DiNicola dished off 10 assists and Oliver Powers grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Devils. For the Deakins, Tory Deakin had eight points and Sean Deveney had eight rebounds. Nicky Tarantino and Austin Jones played well.

Celtics 37, Orangemen 14 – Dana Hansen scored 13 points and Dan Greenwood added eight to lead the Celtics to the win. Evan Kennedy and Brian Czel played well. For the Orangemen, Zach Dlouhy scored four points as Jeff Braun played well.

Jaspers 45, Bullets 44 – Adam Buccino dropped in 18 points and Chris Caulfield played well as the Jaspers nipped the Bullets. For the Bullets, Ryan Daly had 19 points and Matt Baier added 13 more. James Sharpe and Ryan Korth played well.

Rockets 59, Knicks 33 – Josh Jowdy scored 14 points while Ben Mahony and Shane Wurtz canned 12 points apiece to lead the Rockets to the easy win. James Bowers grabbed 12 rebounds. For the Knicks, Eric Thornberg scored 12 points and Dan White added six. Ken Gottschalk and Will Northrup played well.

Wildcats 39, Saints 38 – John Fracker scored 19 points to lead the Wildcats to the thrilling win. Dylan Berger, Nick Wolf and Rockwell Anyoha (four rebounds) played well. For the Saints, Kevin O’Connell popped in 19 points while Andrew Seymour grabbed eight rebounds. Ryan Schmidt dished off five assists and Kevin McCarthy made four steals.

Huskies 55, Eagles 43 – Kyle O’Connor canned 17 points to lift the Huskies to the win. Dylan Huebner, Alex Saviano and Chris Winters played well. For the Eagles, Max Paynter scored 13 points and Brandon Bennett added 11 more.

Huskies 21, Gaels 18 – Lindsay Jossick and Alexi Black combined for 10 points to lead the Huskies to the win. Jenna Poeltl and Lia Tassinari played well. For the Gaels, Keri Chernoff and Lauren Meyer tossed in seven points apiece while Julie LaPerch had five steals.

Suns 36, Regulators 16 – Jackie Kissack scored 18 points and Stefanie Clavette added eight to lead the Suns to the win. Kyra Middeleer, Olivia Phenix, Sarah Stofko and Lauren Sarna played well all-around. For the Regulators, Alexa Pavel canned six points while Stephanie Perrotti pulled down five rebounds. Kelsey Packer played well on D.

Blue Angels 10, Orange Crush 8 – Taylor Brady popped in four points as the Blue Angels nipped the Orange Crush. Linda He had five rebounds as Christina Caporale and Emily Peters played well. For the Crush, Madeline Keane had four points while Rachel Wiberg had four rebounds. Katherine Lotrecchiano and Courtney Escoda played well.

Da Bears 24, Knicks 11 – Kaitlyn Vos Winkel and Jessica Gibbons combined for 10 points to lead Da Bears to the win. Kristy Papaj and Shannon O’Gorman played well. For the Knicks, Kelly Gaston had seven points while Erika Kroesen grabbed six rebounds and Emily Nacewicz made off with four steals.

Knicks 25, Liberty 17 – Kelly Gaston had 17 points and five steals while Caitlin Dowling had six points and five steals to lead the Knicks to the win. Nicole Rotante had five rebounds while Nicole Rothenbucher had a great all-around game. For the Liberty, Lauren Speed canned nine points, Kiersten Lynch grabbed seven rebounds, Suzanne Gissen had five steals and Sara Principi dished off five assists.

Hurricanes 39, Panthers 22 – Chris Tenney canned 12 points and Mike LoBosco dished off eight assists to lead the Hurricanes to the win. Christian Sayegh and Alex Strezlecki played well. For the Panthers, Keegan Lombard anchored the offense while Keenan Bennett and Pat Riccardi played well.

Thunder 36, Rockets 29 – Ryan Dunnigan scored seven points and JP Kitzmiller made seven steals to lead the Thunder to the win. Ben Stoller dished off six assists and Chris Erikson grabbed six boards. For the Rockets, Kevin Dennis popped in 13 points while Stephen Rahr and Chris Devaney played well.

Bullets 33, Regulators 26 – Mike Lengel scored 16 points and Rob Uhde grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Bullets. Kevin Shpunt (five assists) and Pat Zingaro (six steals) played well. For the Regulators, Mike Lord canned 10 points while Bubba LeBlanc had seven assists. Matt Vavrek played well.

Knicks 36, Spurs 14 – Dom Fedak scored eight points and Dave Lucia grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Knicks. Joe Davis and Dave Cartisano played well. For the Spurs, Brandon Marks had six points, Colin Morris had four steals and Charlie Helgren was solid off the glass.

Regulators 36, Rockets 28 – Mike Lord popped in 11 points while Mike Burton, Mario Pitzighelli and Brendan Cooper played well to lead the Regulators. For the Rockets, Michael Greenwood had 11 points and Peter King pulled down six boards. John Lebinski and Harrison Snellback played well.

Nighthawks 33, Huskies 28 – Sean Ross poured in 20 points to lift the Nighthawks to the win. Vick Dickinson and Jake Tolson (nine rebounds) had solid performances. For the Huskies, Sean Burson dropped in 10 points while Peter Ovendorf, Tyler Coleman and Ryan Crowell had strong floor games.

Grizzlies 34, Blazing Warriors 31 – Jake Enriques canned 11 points to power the Grizzlies. Justin DeVellis and Adam Oelberg played well. For the Warriors, Colin Cooper scored 12 points, Mike Scharfenberg grabbed 10 rebounds and Luke Shearin dished off three assists.

Vipers 41, Raptors 12 – Scott Runkle scored 18 points and Kyle Harrington pulled down 14 rebounds to lead the Vipers to the win. Matt Shannon and Robbie Russo played well. For the Raptors, Chad Magoulas, Mick Sajovic and Rob Hughes had solid efforts.
