Science Enrichment Program Combines Learning And Fun

The entire student body of Sandy Hook Elementary School spent last week exploring the scientific principles of gravity, leverage, fulcrums, and simple machines. As part of a science enrichment program, educator and entertainer Garry Krinsky wowed the children with his fast-paced and lively program entitled, âToying With Science.â
Last Monday, Mr Krinsky entertained students with an interactive, informative, and dynamic assembly. The remainder of the week he spent working with small groups of students in a workshop atmosphere to further explore concepts introduced at the assembly.
During the assembly portion of his visit to the school Mr Krinsky swept through the large group, pulling individuals in from the audience to help teach his energetic science lessons. Using a combination of circus skills, mime, and his original music, Mr Krinsky introduced the children to and reinforced scientific principles without the children even being aware of the educational aspect of the program. As part of the presentation he uses upbeat songs, juggling, and balancing acts to demonstrate the use of levers, fulcrums, and basic mechanics.
Later in the week, students had the opportunity to work in small groups with Mr Krinsky in an interactive journey exploring the principles of basic physics. Fourth graders from Liza Eleoffâs class were kept busy in attempts to balance and juggle everyday household items. Lots of giggling, wiggling, and learning took place in a short amount of time.
Fourth grader Shaina Evanko said of Mr Krinskyâs program, âHe makes learning science fun. He is really funny. I wish I knew how to do all the things he can do. Itâs fun to learn how to balance and juggle.â Classmate Alyssa Fulton enthusiastically agreed saying, âIt is amazing how he can balance huge ladders on his chin! You learn more stuff when you are actually doing it.â
Mr Krinsky has been performing high energy and entertaining educational programs since 1978. He has appeared on live television, including the NBC Today Show. In 1995 Mr Krinsky created his âToying With Scienceâ program and has since been touring across the United States and Canada teaching children about science.
