A Dickensian Evening Of Entertainment

At The Westport Country Playhouse

By June S. April

Charles Dickens was a master of milking a good story and was one of the first authors to serialize books. Ergo, it is not too surprising that this engaging production of David Copperfield is a bit too long. However, the wonderful characterizations by all the actors still make it a most delightful evening. Especially memorable are Tom Beckett as the smarmy character Uriah Heep and Bill Buell as the deliciously expansive Mr Peggotty.

Kudos are deserved all around — to the thespians, set, lighting, sound and costume designers. Credit also to Giles Havergal who made a valiant effort at adapting this holiday classic. It was not as brilliant as Travels with My Aunt, but that adaptation was an exceptional theatrical experience. The directorial team of Anne Keefe and Joanne Woodward have created a look into a classic that brings the elements of theater pathos and humor into a fine balance. The simultaneous use of two actors (the older/narrator Copperfield and the younger Copperfield) was interesting and effective.

David Copperfield is a family outing that spans generations. Playing through December 17, tickets can be purchased online at www.westportplayhouse.org or in person at the box office. For additional information and special prices for groups, students, and educators call 203-227-4177.
