Alex Hart and Sarah Harmonay prepare to swim their 100 laps for the Swim-for-Kim benefit recently.

Swimming For Kim

The Newtown Torpedoes Parks and Recreation swim team hosted a Swim-For-Kim fundraiser on Saturday, November 18, to try and help coach Kim Crowley of the Plainville Blue Dolphins recover from a serious accident suffered last summer.

While swimming at Misquamicut beach in Rhode Island, a large wave upended her and left her paralyzed. After neck surgery, she was transferred to Gaylord Rehabilitation Hospital where, through a lot of hard work, she has regained the use of her upper body.

The Plainville Blue Dolphins swim in the Yankee Swim League with the Newtown Torpedoes. The Blue Dolphins invited the Torpedoes to participate in the benefit to assist the Crowley family with unexpected financial burdens.

The Torpedoes swimmers, families and sponsors were overwhelmingly supportive. More than 100 swimmers swam continuously for more than an hour to accumulate as many laps as they could. Sponsors pledged a certain amount of money per lap.

More than $1,500 was raised.
