Cindy Schlier of Newtown, a 1999 graduate of Newtown High School, recently completed her first season as a member of the Suquehanna University women’s tennis team, which finished 5-7 overall, 3-4 in the Commonwealth Conference, under seventh-year head coach Bob Jordan. Schlier, the daughter of Brian and Dorothy Schlier, split her two matches this season. She won at No. 6 singles and lost her only doubles match. Schlier is a sociology major.

Tara Fiscella of Newtown, now a sophomore at Brown University, tied for first place at the ECAC Golf Tournament in October with a blistering two rounds of 73-75-148. That was the lowest score of any Brown University female golfer ever. She lost medalist honors, though, in a playoff. Some 90 players competed in the tournament. Hartford’s Katrina Lekovic claimed medalist honors as she defeated Fiscella – a former standout golfer at Newtown High School – and Yale’s Sarah Seo in a playoff. Lekovic, the 1998 individual champion, fired a two day total 148. Fiscella and Seo finished tied for second.
