Concert Review: 3OH!3 And Emo Nite LA Bring Want House Party To Irving Plaza
NEW YORK CITY — Some people may say emo music was just a phase, but the songs and community the genre produced proved to be engraved permanently in the hearts of hundreds of people who came out to 3OH!3’s Want House Party Tour with Emo Nite LA at Irving Plaza on Tuesday, November 27.
Concert attendees were able to travel to yesteryear and be immersed in a time so vivid and impactful in their lives that they remember every single lyric to the songs they grew up listening to.
The night started off with DJs Cade Werner of Emo Nite LA/Ride or Cry and Cyberspace, who played a variety of hip-hop radio singles from the 2000s, ranging from artists like Lil John to Flo Rida to the mash-up of Linkin Park’s “Numb” and Jay-Z’s “Encore” from the 2004 collaborative album Collision Course.
Once Emo Nite LA — which consists of Morgan Freed, Babs Szabo, and T.J. Petracca — took the stage and Fall Out Boys’ song “Sugar, We’re Goin Down” came through the speakers, the crowd erupted in cheers.
The trio danced and jumped around, hyping up the crowd, and had friends from backstage join in on the fun. At times, they playfully sat on the cushy plaid sofa that was stationed in the center of the stage between two side tables with lamps, portraying a scene reminiscent of house parties across America.
After playing “Dear Maria, Count Me In” by All Time Low and “I’m Not Okay” by My Chemical Romance, Emo Nite LA invited audience members to join them onstage (to which more than a dozen fans happily obliged).
Once on stage, the barrier between fans and artists was broken as everyone sang along together to Taking Back Sunday’s 2006 hit “Damn Sure.”
Suddenly, the sound of a doorbell filled the room, but instead of the police or an unknowing parent coming home early, the house party continued with opening act Lil Aaron joining the revelry.
With his shoulder length neon green hair cascading across his face, he performed his own songs like “Studded Gucci Belt” and “Anymore (featuring Kim Petras)” as well as samples from “Shake It” by Metro Station and “Misery Business” by Paramore.
Lil Aaron ended his set by rushing into the crowd and hopping into a mosh pit that had formed toward the back of the venue.
Mosh pits, crowd surfers, and lighters in the air were all common occurrences throughout the Want House Party Tour, especially as Emo Nite LA continued playing early 2000s hits, including “Mr Brightside” by The Killers, “Fat Lip” by Sum 41, “Reinventing Your Exit” by Underoath, and “Ocean Avenue” by Yellowcard.
“We want everyone on stage,” Mr Freed beckoned to the crowd.
Meanwhile, Emo Nite LA prodigy Rocky Rinaldi, who was featured in Emo Nite LA’s 2017 documentary Every Nite is Emo Nite, made sure everyone who went up on stage felt welcomed. Dressed in the My Chemical Romance’s Black Parade apparel, he energetically sang and danced with audience members, bringing smiles to their faces.
When the doorbell noise echoed through Irving Plaza for a second time, those emerging from the metaphorical house party door were none other than Colorado gents Sean Foreman and Nathaniel “Nat” Motte of 3OH!3.
In honor of the ten-year anniversary of their certified gold album Want, the duo performed the record front to back. Fans got to hear songs that had never been played live before like “Photofinnish” — the name being an homage to the label Photo Finish Records that Want was released on — as well as classics like “Starstrukk” that the duo touted their legendary choreographed moves on.
“I see a dance party going on over here,” Mr Foreman said approvingly to a group in the crowd. “Let’s all have that energy.”
For those who maybe just do not know how to dance, he added, “I’ll show you.”
With those three words still hanging in the air, the crowd witnessed him bust out dance moves that few humans could replicate with such precision and passion.
The night was still young as Emo Nite LA returned for another set following 3OH!3’s entirety of Want. This time around, Emo Nite LA played classics like “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World and “The Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance.
When the sound of a doorbell rang once again, it was 3OH!3 returning to play fan favorites “My First Kiss (featuring Ke$ha)” and the song that launched them to be a house party household name, “Don’t Trust Me.”
At the end of the night, with a sea of fans both on and off stage, Mr Motte concluded the set by saying, “Thank you for partying with us tonight!”
