Emergency 911—

Comcast Phone Service Plans Changing

The discontinued Comcast Digital Phone Service was fully terminated on Tuesday, November 27, including Emergency 911 service, and its subscribers should immediately arrange for alternative service, if they have not already, according to a statement from state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.

Comcast had informed the state of its plan to discontinue its “Digital Phone Service” entirely, shifting its customers to its newer Internet-based “Digital Voice Service.” Comcast has been shifting customers away from its old Digital Phone Service to its new service for several months.

On October 15, Comcast discontinued the older phone service, but continued emergency 911 service for six weeks, in the event certain customers were unaware of the service interruption, despite four warnings that were issued directly to consumers.  The extended 911 service was completely terminated on Tuesday.

“This is an emergency alert about emergency phone services — specifically for subscribers of Comcast’s discontinued Digital Phone Service,” Mr Blumenthal said.

“There may be former subscribers — despite repeated notices — who remain unaware that Comcast is officially discontinuing its Digital Phone Service… including emergency 911 phone services. Consumers who received Comcast Digital Phone Service that have not switched to an alternative telephone service provider should do so immediately to ensure the safety of themselves and their families,” he said.

Consumers seeking alternative service may call Comcast (which offers the new Digital Voice Service) at 800-COMCAST, AT&T Connecticut at 800-288-2020 for service through AT&T’s network, or another competitive provider.
