Snapshot: Joe Chenoweth
Occupation: I am a commercial solar energy developer/installer. I’m the CEO at Smart Roofs Solar in Newtown. We’ve been in town a total of four years. We generally do rooftop commercial solar panel systems for businesses, schools, and soon residential.
Family: I’m one of nine kids. I grew up in Bridgeport, and most of the family lives around here. I live in Newtown with my wife, Jen; 17-year-old son, Joey; and 15-year-old daughter, Lilly.
Pets: We have a rescue dog named Tom who is about four years old.
How long have you lived in Newtown? Nine years. The main reasons we chose Newtown was because of the scenery and the safety. We had heard about what a great community it was.
What do you like to do in your free time? I don’t have free time. I had one employee a year ago, and now I have 25 employees today. The business has grown very, very quickly, so free time is anytime I can spend with the family. I like doing stuff in the yard, which is why I bought a nice, private piece of property.
What is your favorite travel destination? Anywhere warm. I like to travel in the winter.
What is the best part about Newtown? Not to be corny, but people are super nice in Newtown. It doesn’t make sense for the northeast. We’re an anomaly.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? God has been the greatest influence on my life. He gives me a strong foundation to stand on and has not failed me once.
If you could spend the day with one person, who would you choose and why? My grandfather, Joe, passed away when I was 9 years old. I’m named after him. He was in World War II, and I’d just like to get to talk to him about his life.
What is your favorite music genre? Jazz and hard rock. I play drums, so I like jazz because it’s delicate and fun, and I like hard rock because that was my era of music.
Do you have a favorite TV show? I like the mini-series Jack Ryan right now.
What is your favorite food? Key Lime Pie. This stemmed from my first vacation with my wife, Jen, way back in the ‘90s!
What is your favorite quote? “Even if we didn’t have greenhouse gases, we’re going to have to move away from fossil fuels, as we’re going to run out. They’re finite, whereas solar and wind are infinite,” by Ted Turner.
What is your proudest accomplishment? My children and getting to watch them grow.
